Clare Lodge is a Secure Children's home that supports young people who are admitted on welfare grounds. The post is within the dedicated assertive in reach health team which is part of the Children, Young Peoples and Families Directorate within Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Foundation NHS Trust.

We are a busy and energetic team providing a service to young people aged between 12 and 17 years presently living at Clare Lodge. The young people we support often present with complex mental health needs complex trauma presentations and high levels of risk.

It is an excellent motivated team, staffed by experienced multi-disciplinary workers, including Psychologists, a consultant psychiatrist, physical health nurses, occupational therapist and a mental health nurse. The Health Team work alongside the residential and education teams to implement a therapeutic model across the unit.

The ideal candidate will have a strong team work ethic, sense of accountability, accompanied by an ability to work under considerable pressure at times with the right attributes to enhance a team.

The necessary support to ensure your development within your role and access to support from peers of your own clinical profession will be provided. We are keen to support and develop our staff through a career pathway and encourage opportunities.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the management of a specialist clinical caseload of children with complex needs including ASD, ADHD, Learning Disabilities and co-morbid mental health needs.

This post is suitable for a therapist with experience in the specialism or as a developing specialist post.

  • To work as an integral member of the Clare Lodge In-reach healthcare team.
  • Contributing to comprehensive speech and language assessments demonstrating the appropriate use, interpretation, and integration of data from a variety of sources including, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the clients care., a range of direct work and evidence-based therapeutic intervention. To have the ability to utilise specialist knowledge to make decisions about a child or young persons mental health needs.
  • To participate in the assessment and intervention of speech and language difficulties for children living at Clare Lodge.
  • Carrying out and interpreting a range of assessments with students with SEMH eg formal and informal for pragmatics, narrative skills, in addition to other language assessments.
  • Identify appropriate assessment, intervention, and management of children with complex speech, language, and communication needs.
  • To develop formulations of presenting problems or situations that integrate information from assessments within a coherent framework that draws upon mental health theory and evidence which incorporates developmental, interpersonal, societal, cultural, and biological factors.
  • To evaluate and make treatment decisions in collaboration with the Clare Lodge Healthcare Team and in consultation with a qualified Clinical or Counselling Psychologist about treatment options considering both theoretical and therapeutic models and factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family, carers, or group.
  • To be responsible for terminating intervention in consultation with other professionals involved.
  • To use routine outcome monitoring to inform clinical practice through supervision and care planning.
  • To educate and involve children and young people and family/carers, in their care/support plan and provide opportunities or service users to contribute to assessment and the development of service provision.
  • To contribute to the development of systems for the management of referrals including screening, filtering, redirecting and fast-tracking referrals as appropriate.
  • To be responsible for accepting appropriate referrals, manage and evaluate caseload and manage time accordingly.
  • To network and develop partnerships with other professionals within Clare Lodge and the wider network including Social Services, Education, General Practitioners, Health Promotion Agencies, and the Voluntary Sector.
  • Ability to provide clinical consultation to other professionals on a variety of levels. This will involve consulting and advising on a wide range of issues regarding the speech and language needs of children and young people.
  • To work within the framework of legislation, guidance, policies and procedures relating to young people leaving care, with particular reference to the Children Order (NI) 1995, Children (Leaving Care) Act (NI) 2002, the Mental Health (NI) Order 1986 and relevant guidance from the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
  • To maintain accurate and appropriate records of work undertaken.
  • To ensure Trust policy in relation to confidentiality is maintained at all times.
  • To attend training opportunities to promote professional practice and skills development in line with professional body requirements.
  • To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professions on aspects of risk assessment and risk management in line with Trust and inter-agency policies and procedures.
  • To communicate, in a highly skilled and sensitive manner, to clients, relevant Professionals, family carers and others as appropriate, information that may be contentious or highly distressing concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of clients under their care.
  • To monitor and evaluate progress during stay at Clare Lodge and complete appropriate onward referrals as appropriate.
  • To produce reports on clients, in a timely manner, that convey the key findings of a mental health assessment and formulation and treatment outcome in a way that does justice to the complexity of the problems described, but that are understandable to the recipients of the reports, including clients and referrers. To assist in the management of the service caseload.
  • To work in partnership with other disciplines and to maintain links with statutory and non-statutory and primary care agencies as appropriate.

  • To work closely with onsite education provision to support individual needs of a young person.

    Person Specification Education/Qualifications Essential
    • Degree or equivalent in Speech and Language Therapy.
    • Registered Member of RCSLT.
    • Registered Member of HPC.
    • Evidence of successful completion of short specialist courses.
    Desirable
    • Evidence of commitment to CPD.
    • Membership of relevant Clinical Excellence Network.
    • Dysphagia training.
    Experience Essential
    • Experience working in community clinics and schools.
    • Experience working with children and young people with experience.
    • Relevant experience post registration.
    • Experience and evidence of working with children who have complex needs.
    Desirable
    • Working with secondary school children.
    Knowledge & Skills Essential
    • Well-established knowledge about developmental speech and language disorders.
    • Knowledge of assessment procedures relevant to the children and young people with a social communication disorder.
    • Knowledge of a range of therapeutic interventions appropriate to children and young people with ASD.
    • Highly developed auditory perceptual skills and the ability to transcribe speech phonetically.
    • Excellent communication skills including the ability to convey sensitive or distressing information to parents/carers.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills including observation, listening and empathy.
    Desirable
    • Computer literate.
    • Knowledge of AAC.
    • Trained in BOSA, ADOS and ADI.
    • Experience working with children and young people with SEMH.
