This is an exciting and varied role for a Community Psychiatric Nurse to work across an evolving service within the OPD pathway. You will be joining a small, friendly and experienced team of NHS and probation staff. Your expertise will be greatly valued by the team and you will have a say in how the service is shaped to meet the needs of our service users.

It is an autonomous role where you will manage your own diary, but you will likely be out and about most days working with service users and probation officers. There is a big focus on development so we are very fortunate to have a training budget which in previous years has allowed us to upskill in areas such as EMDR or PCL-R.

The service will run 5 days per week, 9 am to 5 pm

Main duties of the job

To provide specialist community nursing input to a new Intensive Integrated Risk Management Service (IIRMS) and Mental Health Wellness Clinic for offenders within the National Probation Service bases. The post holder will be able to request which probation site/s they work at; Cambridge, Huntingdon, Peterborough, Peterborough Approved Premises.

The post holder will provide face to face holistic mental health assessments for offenders who may have primary or secondary mental health needs. They will also provide low intensity / primary care level mental health evidenced based interventions including psychoeducation and guided self help.

The post holder will liaise with Mental Health In-Reach teams in local prisons.

The post holder will engage in intensive Out-Reach community work where appropriate, coordinating groups and assist with integration into community with provision of other services.

They will refer to secondary mental health services or partner agencies as appropriate or give advice on self-referrals.

The post holder will provide advice and guidance on the management of complex mental health cases to Offender Managers.

  • To be responsible for providing the nursing input to the IIRMS and OPD teams.
  • Use evidence based mental health assessments, provide specialist knowledge, engagement and risk management of complex service users.
  • To liaise with other agencies that would be beneficial for the service users care, and to promote integration of service users
  • To escort service users to appointments and community visits as part of assessment, community integration and risk management. Taking responsibility for the arrangements, communication with agencies, and ensuring all policies and procedures are followed.
  • To provide the Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) service at the National Probation Service offices to run a wellness clinic.
  • To provide mental health assessments for offenders where mental health difficulties are suspected/ identified.
  • To provide short term low level wellness interventions, including psychoeducation and guided self help.
  • To make referrals to other appropriate services where required.
  • To take a lead role in mental health.
  • To work closely with the Clinical Psychologist in the OPD service when working with complex cases.
  • To provide specialist knowledge and advice to probation colleagues.
  • To share information with key partners in line with CPFT and NPS polices and procedures.

Person Specification Education / Qualifications Essential
  • Registered Nurse Mental Health (RNMH)
  • NMC registration.
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Training relevant to practice
  • Post Graduate Diploma
  • Specific training in either family work or Psychological approaches
Experience Essential
  • Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Previous experience of working with service users with acute psychiatric disorders and complex mental health needs.
  • Experience of supervising staff
  • Experience of managing own caseload.
  • Experience of working with patients with forensic histories
  • Experience of managing a mental health clinic
  • Experience of working in assertive outreach, crisis or home treatment services
  • Lived experience of mental health
  • Experience of providing mentorship
Skills and Abilities Essential
  • Ability to undertake assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of treatment plans
  • The ability to supervise and participate in providing teaching and training to other staff
  • Ability to prioritise work demands and be flexible
  • Proven skills in undertaking risk assessments and management plans.
  • Skill in caseload management at both an individual and team level.
  • Effective communication skills both verbally and written, including IT literacy
  • An understanding of the needs of the client group in community settings.
  • An understanding and commitment to the principles of recovery and social inclusion
  • An understanding of the role of health promotion and education with the client group.
  • Knowledge and skill related to a particular therapeutic intervention such as CBT, psychoeducational work and psychosocial interventions.
Knowledge and Understanding Essential
  • Knowledge of physical healthcare needs
  • Awareness of safeguarding issues and responsibilities under relevant legislation
  • Understanding of the legislation relating to care including - Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Act, Children's Act, Equality Act 2010, Health and Safety Act, Data Protection Act and GDPR.
  • Knowledge of NICE guidance relevant to area of practice.
  • Knowledge of the Criminal Justice Services and MAPPA
Physical Requirements Essential
  • To be able to travel independently between locations as and when required.
  • Routine and regular use of IT equipment.
