We are looking to recruit enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 Registered Mental Health Nurses to join our Adult Inpatient Mental Health wards. In return for your commitment and enthusiasm, working within the unique Adult 3-3-3 inpatient system will give you the opportunity to practice a full range of core mental health nursing skills and to also teach, supervise and support colleagues.

Main duties of the job

The ideal candidate will have a commitment to teamwork, a sense of accountability, plus an ability to work under pressure.

The post holder will provide quality evidence-based nursing advice, support and care for service users with mental and physical health needs and to their carers within a multidisciplinary setting.

They will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care, and will have a working knowledge of local, national policies and legislation which govern current service provision.

The post holder will be responsible for identifying and contributing to the training needs of junior registered and unregistered staff and ensure that issues of equality, diversity and rights are dealt with in accordance with good practice and legislation.

They will ensure that effective communication pathways exist, and that they act within their sphere of responsibility, managing the night shift in the absence of the Ward Manager or the designated deputy.

  • To carry out a full range of registered nurse duties, including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the patients condition and care with support from the nurse in charge.
  • To establish therapeutic relationships with service users, and the implementation of evidence based therapeutic interventions with appropriate boundaries in accordance with NMC professional code of conduct.
  • To understand NICE quality standards and guidance relevant to area of practice and patient group.
  • To prioritise nursing care, recognise deterioration in a patients condition and alert senior staff immediately.
  • Participate in the health education and explanation of treatment to patients and relatives.
  • To ensure that the requirements of the Mental Health Act 2007 are observed, adhered to, and implemented.


Person Specification Education/Qualifications Essential
  • Registered Nurse Mental Health (RNMH) or Registered Nurse Learning Disability (RNLD)
Desirable
  • Post graduate qualification relating to ward specialism
Experience Essential
  • Experience of in-patient services and working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Basic level of dealing with service users with complex mental health needs
Desirable
  • Experience of providing mentorship
  • Experience relating to ward specialism
Skills and Abilities Essential
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including IT literacy (MS Office).
  • Ability to use own initiative, to enable contribution to a multi-disciplinary team approach
  • Effective time management and organisation skills
Knowledge and understanding Essential
  • Thorough understanding of care planning
  • Awareness of safeguarding issues and responsibilities under relevant legislation
  • Basic understanding of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act
