The Tri-borough Perinatal Mental Health Service (PMHS) have an exciting opportunity for motivated and creative Band 7 Nurses (substantive), who may be looking for a chance to develop their skills in the specialist area of Perinatal.

There are currently 3wte vacancies within the Tri-Borough Perinatal Service (Ealing, Hounslow, Hammersmith & Fulham).

Part-time working can be considered.

The service has operational bases at St Bernard's Hospital site (Ealing PMHS), Lakeside Mental Health Unit (Hounslow PMHS), and Hammersmith Hospital (H&F PMHS), but the teams work in an agile way - combination of community settings (mental health unit / maternity units / children's centres), home visits and working from home (if able).

Main duties of the job

  • Ensuring women (age 18+) who are pregnant and booked for delivery and/or have infants under twenty-four months receive appropriate screening, assessment and identification of their mental health needs and these are managed using evidence-based interventions throughout this period
  • Actively liaising with primary care, maternity and health visiting staff as well as other mental health services regarding referrals, care co-ordination, transfer of care including facilitating professionals' meetings
  • Efficiently managing a caseload of up to 25 women (antenatal and postnatal) with moderate mental health needs, by providing assessments and reviews in community sites (children's centres), joint reviews with maternity, health visitors or other mental health professionals, home visits and care planning meetings
  • Providing on-going training, supervision, consultation and advice on mental health issues in childbearing to a range of professionals who work closely with this group of women
  • Participating on rotation in the service daily Duty rota, to support the triage of new referrals and urgent / emergency presentations in the maternity units, or community
  • Supervising and mentoring students in the service.

Job description Job responsibilities

The Tri-borough Perinatal Mental Health Service (PMHS) are an energetic, creative and welcoming service, which aims to offer and inspire excellence in community perinatal mental health care. The service operates Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm and sees women age 18+ from pre-conception up to 24 months post-partum. The service is on a trajectory of transformation as part of the NHS Long Term Plan, including further expansion in 23/24.

The multi-disciplinary team currently comprises Team & Service Managers, Consultants (including a Clinical Lead), Nurses, Social Workers, OTs, Psychologists, Nursery Nurses, Peer Support Workers, Pharmacist and Administrators.

The service has completed two RCPsych CCQI Perinatal Quality Network Peer Reviews in 2018 and 2019 and its first accreditation review in September 2021 (outcome still pending).

The service also has a well-established Experts by Experience group that meets monthly and a strong ethos of co-production.

The service is able to offer the successful candidate(s) a bespoke induction and on-going training programme to facilitate their development within the post.


1.1 To deliver, or support the delivery of, highly specialist evidence-based assessment, care planning, treatment and review for women in the perinatal period.

1.2 Under supervision provide specialist consultation, advice and support to both WLT in-patient and community services, as well as other external services/stakeholders on best practice when working with pregnant women and women with infants up to two-years-old.

1.3 To work jointly with care co-ordinators from local recovery teams, with a small complex and challenging caseload of pregnant women or those with infants, up to 2 years postnatal.

1.4 To work in consultation with other professionals making known concerns regarding safeguarding children and/or adults to the appropriate and responsible service. This includes attending Safeguarding Children Conferences as appropriate where the child is at risk because of the mothers mental illness.

1.5 To support the MDT in setting up structures that allow the dissemination of knowledge and skills regarding working with perinatal women in both in-patient and community services.

1.6 To liaise and work with specialist tertiary services such as Mother & Baby Units, personality disorder services, eating disorder services etc.

1.7 To work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team exercising semi-autonomous professional responsibility for managing a clinical caseload independently. Providing highly specialist assessments and follow-up for women referred with moderate needs. Which includes assessment of risk in terms of self-harm, self-neglect, vulnerability, harm to others, domestic violence and safeguarding children.

1.8 To seek consultation where necessary with clinical supervisor and/or line manager on clinical work and participate in regular supervision.

1.9 To be mindful of the needs of women and their families from a wide range of racial, cultural, sexual, religious and social backgrounds and to develop, with colleagues, sensitive and innovative ways of meeting these needs.

1.10 To ensure care plans are developed in partnership with the woman and that they reflect personal recovery goals. These should be strengths-based and oriented towards reinforcing a positive identity and developing valued social roles. This may require pre and post birth meetings.

1.11 To attend the WLT Safeguarding Children multidisciplinary meetings and any other relevant multidisciplinary meetings within Maternity services, as appropriate.

1.12 To be responsible for monitoring, recording and reporting on clinical work and communicating highly complex clinical information to a variety of recipients (e.g. patients, families and carers, other professionals) orally and in writing.

1.13 To be responsible for developing and maintaining knowledge of local resources and developing excellent working relationships with relevant statutory, voluntary and community groups and organisations.

1.14 To participate in rotation on the service daily Duty rota, as required, to support the triage of new referrals and urgent / emergency presentations in the maternity units.

Person Specification Qualifications and Training Essential
  • RMN qualification and evidence of registration on Part 3 of NMC register or equivalent
  • Evidence of continuing professional development including recently in perinatal mental health practice and safeguarding children practice
  • ENB 998 or equivalent practice / placement educator course
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Dual qualified as RGN or midwife
  • Specialist training in perinatal and/or infant mental health
  • Clinical supervision training
  • Qualification / training in additional specialist skills e.g. therapeutic / psychological interventions
Experience Essential
  • Significant post qualification experience working in mental health services
  • Experience working with women with serious mental illness
  • Evidence of networking within the Perinatal specialty
  • Experience of managing a caseload of service users with evidence of completing high quality assessments
  • Experience of working in a complex multi-disciplinary / multi-agency context
  • Experience of formal child protection processes and inter-agency work with families
  • Experience of undertaking complex mental health and mental state, risk and needs assessments
  • Experience of working in a multi-racial/cultural community and of working with interpreters
  • Experience of multi-agency pre-birth planning for women with serious mental illness
  • Experience of working in obstetrics and gynaecology
