An opportunity has arisen for a professional to take on an exciting new role working with children under 18 years and to be a dedicated member of the Liaison and Diversion team based in Durham. You will work alongside the Durham Youth Offending Team. The main purpose of this role is to ensure the mental health need of the young person accessing youth justice service is met through assessment and multi-agency working. You will look at dual diagnosis with the child.

You will be able to work as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary team and develop positive working relationships within Youth Offending, Liaison and Diversion and external agencies to meet the complex needs of children and young people as well as their families/carers. The ability to communicate and have good listening skills to meet the holistic needs of the child is important.

Due to the nature of the role it is essential that applicants are able to travel independently across the locality and have access to a suitable vehicle for business purposes. If necessary, adjustments can be considered in accordance with the Equality Act 2010.

Main duties of the job

CAMHS Practitioner will assess children under 18 years looking at mental health need and dual diagnosis. They provide an integrated approach and work within Liaison and Diversion team but work closely with Youth Offending Team.

They undertake mental health assessments, provide advice and liaise with external services.

They offer advice to Youth Offender workers in preparation for them to complete the reports and signpost to the appropriate services.

Deliver training to Youth Offender workers to further their knowledge on emotional well-being of children.

Make a strong link with CAMHS and assist the children to access services and intervention where needed.

To liaise with the child's family/ carers and offer advice and support where needed.

Liaise with social care, police, Forensic CAMHS and the Court to offer advice and knowledge.

Work flexibly and be creative when working with children and young people who may need outreach work and support in attending appointments with external services such as CAMHS.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Current professional registration with appropriate body in healthcare or social work
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
  • Post-graduate qualification in a relevant area (within agreed timescale)
  • Depending on work area, recognised sign-off mentor (or equivalent) or must be achieved within agreed timescale.
  • Key skills in literacy, numeracy and ITQ level 2 (or equivalent)
Desirable
  • Leadership or management qualification
  • CAMHS Degree
  • Certificate in teaching & assessing in clinical practice as appropriate to own profession
  • Recognised qualification in a specific model of therapy e.g. family therapy, CBT etc
  • Recognised training in Facilitation of Parenting Groups.
Experience Essential
  • Working collaboratively with service users and their families/carers.
  • Providing clinical supervision
  • Working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Quality improvement activities
Desirable
  • Leadership or management experience
  • Significant experience working with children and young people with mental ill health in a community setting.
  • Mentoring students on practice placement experience.
Knowledge Essential
  • Demonstrable knowledge to post-graduate level of evidence-based practice in caring for children and young people in the designated field.
  • Understanding of relevant legislation (e.g. Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act).
  • Care Programme Approach and its application in practice
  • Detailed understanding of Safeguarding and its application in practice.
  • Clinical Risk Assessment and Management and its application in practice.
  • Clinical Governance and its application in practice.
  • Research and development methodology
  • Understanding of psychological models of care and treatment.
Desirable
  • The Trust's Quality Improvement System (QIS)
