This is a replacement post into the existing Consultant complement.

The post holder will join an existing compliment of community Older People Consultants and an integrated team to provide mental health care to the Chester City population. The team have a strong integration approach with links to primary care services and care communities.

The post holder will provide leadership to community staff and community care to patients with dementia (and related conditions) and severe and enduring mental disorders aged 65 and above.

The service takes referrals from GP surgeries covering a population of 48,000 over 65s. The workload will be managed by 3 Community consultants who liaise with inpatient consultants when their patients are admitted. Community consultants (including this post) have their own geographic patch within the locality.

The post holder will have an important role in further development of integration of mental and physical health in our neighbourhoods to ensure alignment with the plans for the WCICP and the Long term plan.

The post holder will participate in the West Consultant Psychiatrist on-call rota.

Main duties of the job

  • The Consultant will be expected to undertake 11 PA per week divided into 7.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). In addition he/she will be expected to contribute to on call rota and additional 1 PA for emergency work. These duties will be negotiated with the West Place Based Clinical Director.
  • Clinical duties will be prioritised in line with Trust policies to ensure safe and effective practice to those with the greatest need. The work programme will be balanced to ensure that the Consultant is supported. Prioritisation will be used to maintain acceptable workload if demand exceeds capacity.
  • Provide consultant medical input to the CMHT for The Chester City Patch, which will be part of the West footprint of Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Input into both organic and functional patients. Management of complex cases.
  • Mental Health Act implementation.
  • Care plan and treatment formulation, guidance on evidence-based treatment and effectiveness.
  • Provide case discussion opportunity to all team members but also provide supervision to the Advance Nurse Practitioner, memory nurses and trainees if applicable.
  • Clinical leadership of team.

All new clinical support staff will be required to have completed or working towards the Care Certificate (CWP In-house 2 day training to be completed within 6 months of start date).

Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. Costs are deducted from salary following appointment.You are encouraged to enrol for the DBS Update Service. A small annual fee of £13 per year applies.

New entrants to the NHS will commence on the minimum of the scale stated above.

Person Specification QUALIFICATIONS Essential
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
Desirable
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
  • MRCPsych
  • Additional clinical qualifications.
ELIGIBILITY Essential
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.
Desirable
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
CLINICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE Essential
  • Excellent knowledge in specialty
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
