Inpatient service: acute female treatment ward (Topaz Ward) and mixed gender functional mental illness elderly ward (Pearl Ward)

We are looking for an enthusiastic doctor to join our inpatient service at the level of a core trainee (LAS) in psychiatry. The post may suit a variety of doctors, but may particularly suit doctors considering a career in psychiatry.

This post is split between Topaz Ward and Pearl Ward. Both wards are located in the Highgate Mental Health Centre.

Topaz Ward is a female acute treatment ward which manages patients with a broad range of mental illnesses but especially psychotic illnesses. Pearl Ward specialises in the care of older patients with functional illnesses such as psychosis and depression.

Supervision will be provided by the ward consultants and the post holder will have the opportunity to have study leave and attend the Trust's weekly academic meeting.

The post holder will be on the out of hours on call rota (approximately 1 in 15) and will contribute to the daytime 'duty bleep' rota at the Highgate Mental Health Centre.

Any potential applicants who would like to discuss the posts further are welcome to contact Dr Neil Stewart, Associate Clinical Director, Highgate Mental Health Centre: neil1.stewart@candi.nhs.uk or mobile 07906785015

Main duties of the job

Highgate Mental Health Centre is one of two inpatient sites in the trust, the other being St Pancras Hospital. Topaz is a treatment ward and Pearl is an older adult ward.

On Topaz ward there is a consultant and middle grade sessions and a full time CT as well as sessions from an F1. There is usually a GP trainee working 50% on the ward but due to the GP trainee working LTFT they will not be on the ward for Feb 2023, so this post is partly to cover gap. There is a ward MDT.

On Pearl there is a consultant, a CT working LTFT 60% (post to cover the other 40%) sessions from F2 and a full time F1.

Supervision will be provided by the ward consultants. There is also consultant availability on the phone/email as needed. Outside those hours, the trainee receives support from the ST and consultant on call as needed. At the beginning of the post the trainer will determine the level of clinical supervision required. As a guideline, for core trainees who are new to psychiatry, it is mandatory for you to discuss all patient management decisions that you make, prior to their being enacted.

You will be required to join the afterhours full shift duty rota. This rota is resident. There are three 1 in 15 Core Trainee after hours rotas. There is also a 4th on call flexible rota for night shifts only. This person may be redeployed to cover rota gaps.
