This is an exciting opportunity to join and help develop a newly commissioned Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) Service. The service, due to be mobilised in April, will include an OPD outreach service to men within HMP High Down and a specialist residential Psychologically Informed Planned Environment (PIPE) unit for men with learning disabilities. You will be joining & establishing a new staff team that will include psychologists, a neurodiversity practitioner, occupational therapy assistant, a Speech & Language therapist, prison officers and an Advanced Lived Experience Practitioner. We are seeking a compassionate & enthusiastic senior OT with an interest and skills in team working, sensory integration, personality disorder and/or neurodiversity. Training opportunities available.

This is a London Pathways Partnership (LPP) service, with CNWL as the lead provider. LPP is a consortium of 5 NHS Trusts working in partnership to deliver a network of services to complex and high-risk service users in London & the Southeast. LPP deliver integrated services, primarily within the OPD pathway across London community & within several local prisons, thus ensuring a supported prison to community pathway. We actively support research and have close relationships with academics from several local universities

Main duties of the job

To work as an independent OT practitioner with men in prison presenting with complex and challenging needs and residing on the PIPE (Psychologically Informed Planned Environment) unit.

To work within a multi-disciplinary team to provide a comprehensive service to men with personality disorder and intellectual disability on the PIPE unit and to contribute to ensuring the PIPE is a successful, enabling environment. Also to contribute to supporting men in their own location at HMP Highdown through the OPD Outreach Service.

To lead on the planning and delivery of enrichment activities and a therapeutic social setting for the PIPE and to the standards of an Enabling Environment as defined by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

To develop and implement the OT pathway for the PIPE service including the use of assessment tools and interventions with personal recovery principles which will engage individuals in activities and occupation, encouraging the development of 'surviving and thriving' skills & knowledge.

To apply a high level of understanding of the impact of mental and physical health conditions, as well as sensory and processing difficulties on daily living function; providing training and advice on lifestyle changes & adaptations.

To work with the Clinical Lead to continue to develop and deliver a comprehensive OT Service within the PIPE, including assessment, intervention and evaluation which is underpinned by an evidence base and personal recovery principles.

Person Specification Education & Qualifications Essential
  • oHPCP Registered Practitioner Occupational Therapist
  • oMentorship or supervisor qualification
  • oEvidence of professional development since registration
Desirable
  • Post registration qualification that enhances clinical work: Sensory Integration PGDip, CBT, DBT, Dual Diagnosis, etc.
Previous Experience Essential
  • Relevant post registration experience
  • oExperience of working as part of a multi- disciplinary team
  • Experience of working with complex clients, including those with Intellectual disability
  • oExperience of running a group program
  • oExperience of leading and /or developing a service/ component of a service
Desirable
  • oExperience of working in a Prison or forensic environment
Skills and Knowledge Essential
  • oExpert in engaging with people with mental health problems, assessing their needs, designing and delivering appropriate interventions and evaluating the effectiveness of the process.
  • oRisk assessment and management skills
  • oExcellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • oExcellent IT skills.
  • oAbility to work effectively as part of a team and independently as appropriate
  • oTo use supervision positively and effectively
  • oProven ability to work with patients to increase their level of self-determination and resilience
  • oEffective time management
  • oKnowledge of the needs and rights of patients.
  • oKnowledge of CPA, Mental Health Act, MAPPA, legislation and policies relevant to prison mental health.
  • oKnowledge of safeguarding frameworks
  • oProblem solving, stress management & conflict resolution skills.
  • o Ability to engage in evidence based practice, with an understanding of care quality (clinical governance).
  • Knowledge of current challenges / developments in Prison health.
