An exciting opportunity has arisen for 3, band 5, Staff Nurses to join the Mental Health Older Persons inpatient service currently based at Rowan Lea ,Cross lane Hospital, Scarborough.

Rowan Lea is a 20 bedded mixed gender assessment and treatment ward for older people, with both organic and functional illnesses. We work collaboratively with patients and carers to develop individual well-being treatment plans. The team encourages innovative practice and supports development and aims promote at all times, a positive image of people with mental ill health.

We have a broad multi-disciplinary inpatient team that includes nurses, medical staff, a physical health care practitioner, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychology. There is local access to nutrition and dietetic staff within MHSOP. We work in partnership with local Community Teams .

Main duties of the job

This post is only open to those candidates who already have their NMC registration in place and have successfully completed the preceptorship programme. Please note: Newly qualified applicants or those due to qualify will be recruited via a separate process.

You will be a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) , we also welcome applicants from Learning Disability Nurses (LD). You should be able to demonstrate continuing professional development, effective generic nursing skills and the confidence to meet the requirements of a Band 5 position working with older people.

You will be joining an established and supportive multi-disciplinary team that is committed to delivering high quality, patient centred care and be committed to participate in quality improvement activities.

You will be working closely with other professionals in the team and external agencies; you will provide evidence based nursing interventions, including aspects of care ranging from initial assessment, treatment monitoring, delivery of therapeutic interventions, crisis management and positive behaviour support and discharge.

You will have the on going opportunity to develop your skills within the wider team in relation to the care of patients experiencing organic mental health problems such as Dementia and Functional illness such as Depression & Anxiety , you will be supported through supervision and on- going professional development opportunities.

Person Specification Qualification Essential
  • RNMH or RNLD current professional registration with NMC.
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
  • MIP, FLIP, ENB 998 Teaching & Assessing in Clinical Practice or City & Guilds 730 Teaching in Adult Education or willingness to work towards. Qualification must be achieved within agreed timescale.
  • Trained Clinical Supervisor (within agreed timescale)
  • Key skills in literacy, numeracy and ITQ level 2 (or equivalent)
Desirable
  • Post-graduate qualification in a relevant area
Experience Essential
  • Working with people with mental ill health.
Desirable
  • Working in a person centred therapeutic organisation
Knowledge Essential
  • Evidenced based knowledge of best practice in caring for patients in the designated field. (2)
  • Clinical Risk Assessment and Management and its application in practice. (2)
Skills Essential
  • oCommunicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers/families and all members of the multidisciplinary team.
