Psychiatric Liaison Nurse (PLN) work closely with the people who use our services, families, friends and carers and play an important contribution in how people experience our services. P.L.N. nurses are expected to be kind and responsive but professional and informative and contribute to the quality of the services we provide by:

keeping the people who using our services as safe as possible through the use of sound clinical skills and effective risk assessments

ensuring the best possible clinical outcomes by using up-to-date skills and adhering to evidence-based policies and procedures

ensuring the people using our services have a good experience by respecting, empowering and working in partnership with people throughout the care planning process

We believe that the best health care is delivered by multi-disciplinary teams working well together and in partnership with other teams and services to provide seamless care. PLN work as part of a team and you will contribute to the success of the team by being an effective role model of assessment of service users and family in Hillingdon A+E.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for applicants who have completed their preceptorship and are able to work creatively and effectively in a busy and demanding role. The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate progressive skills in leadership, supervision, clinical practice, service development, risk assessment and care management. We are seeking nurses who are also friendly, approachable, compassionate and motivated with good communication skills. If you are committed to providing person centered care with a sound knowledge of best practice, this could be the opportunity for you. Our nurses work within our supportive nursing structure in developing and implementing assessments, treatments and recovery focused care for patients and their family. You will receive ongoing support from your peers and team leader. You will also receive individual supervision as well as support in reflective practice groups.

The successful applicant will be an NHS employee and may therefore have contact with vulnerable service users. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been necessary to take significant steps to protect the health and safety of our staff, service users and those attending our sites. In order to comply with our duty of care, we require our staff to have the COVID vaccine and we will ask for proof of vaccination during the recruitment process.

Person Specification Training/Qualifications Essential
  • oRMN on live register
  • oEvidence of an active interest in further professional development.
  • oMentorship in Practice/ENB 998 or equivalent (or a willingness to complete)
Desirable
  • oEducated to degree level
  • oEducated to diploma level or equivalent in Psychiatric Nursing, Psychotherapy, Counselling or a related discipline
  • oOther courses relevant to liaison psychiatry.

Previous Experience Essential
  • oPost-registration experience
  • oKnowledge of counselling skills/cognitive behavioural skills/psychosocial interventions/brief solution focused therapy
  • oRisk assessment/management
  • oAbility to interpret research and apply to practice.
  • Has had experience with; Adult Acute Psychiatric Admission/Triage ward, Community Mental Health Team, Adult Crisis Resolution Team/Home Treatment Team, Psychiatric Liaison Nurse position or role , Assessment and Brief Treatment Team or similar service , Psychiatric Assessment Team in an inreach/outreach setting, Primary Care Mental Health Team

  • oENB 870 (Understanding Research). ENB 934 Care and management of persons with HIV/AIDS.
Knowledge & Skills Essential
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English and to be able to demonstrate your written and verbal skills
  • A comprehensive understanding of the Mental Health Act (1983), the Mental Health Code of Practice, the Mental Capacity Act (2005), and the CPA process
  • Specialist knowledge of mental health problems and their relationship to physical disorders
  • An understanding of the risk assessment process (including deliberate self-harm)
  • Able to build constructive relationships using warmth and empathy.
  • Ability to engage challenging and/or acutely distressed patients in potentially hostile and/or antagonistic situations and use de - escalation techniques effectively.
  • A willingness to use clinical knowledge to be able to make autonomous decisions, based on an analysis of complex presenting problems and judgement about available options
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships both within a team and with external organisations.
  • Ability to carry out mental health assessments
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment and prioritise workload
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work shifts.
