An exciting opportunity has risen for an experienced band 7 mental health professional to work in the PLAN accredited Liaison Psychiatry Service at Cambridge University Hospital, Addenbrookes, working within the Adult Emergency Department team covering a 24/7 rota whilst also being flexible to assist other liaison psychiatry teams where required.

The Liaison Psychiatry Service for Adults and Older Persons has close links with the broader mental health services provided by the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT; the Trust). There are wide-ranging opportunities for training and development both within CPFT and Liaison Psychiatry.

Main duties of the job

As part of the Liaison Psychiatry Service, the post-holder will contribute to the multi-disciplinary clinical assessment and management of patients referred to the service in collaboration with other team members.

Providing and undertaking timely biopsychosocial assessments and risk management plans in accordance with CPFT's Clinical Risk Assessment and Management policy for adults presenting to the Acute Trust with mental health problems.

This role is a permanent, full-time vacancy for an enthusiastic and motivated Clinical Nurse Specialist / Mental Health Professional wanting to join the established liaison psychiatry emergency department team.

The liaison psychiatry service is highly regarded nationally and is accredited through the Psychiatric Liaison Accreditation Network (PLAN). The service consists of highly skilled psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses and occupational therapists.

The service aims to offer exceptional standards of care to all patients attending Cambridge University Hospital experiencing a comorbid mental health issue. As such, an opportunity has arisen to recruit a dynamic CNS / MHP on a permanent contract who will work 10-hour shifts across a 24/7 rota.

  • To assist in the delivery of a high-quality Liaison Psychiatry service within Addenbrookes Hospital in keeping with the visions and values of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Providing and undertaking timely biopsychosocial assessments and risk management plans in accordance with CPFTs Clinical Risk Assessment and Management policy for adults presenting to the Emergency Department with mental health problems.
  • Promoting a safe and effective service throughout the Emergency Department; this will be through training and giving expert advice and support to nursing and medical teams within the Emergency Department
  • Maintaining a visible, professional presence where patients, carers and staff can turn for assistance, advice and support.
  • As part of the Liaison Psychiatry Service, the post-holder will contribute to the multidisciplinary clinical assessment and management of patients referred to the service in collaboration with other team members.
  • To participate in and promote close links with community mental health teams and other agencies to develop effective care plans.


  • Person Specification Education/Qualifications Essential
    • Registered Mental Health Nurse or equivalent professional registration
    • Evidence of relevant post registration training and development.
    • Mentor and mentorship training or willingness to complete
    Desirable
    • Independent and supplementary Prescriber
    • Recognised training qualification.
    Experience Essential
    • Significant post registration experience in working with people with mental health needs.
    • Community and in-patient experience in mental health services.
    • Considerable experience in the assessment and management of clinical risk.
    • Experience in the planning and delivery of training and practice developments to staff.
    • Experience of effective collaborative working.
    • Evidence of ability to drive for results.
    • Evidence of experience in service evaluation and improvements.
    • Evidence of Interdisciplinary / multi-agency working experience
    Desirable
    • Clinical audits and research.
    • Experience of working in Liaison Psychiatry

    • Up to date knowledge of appropriate assessment scales.
    • Good Knowledge of the policies and guidelines pertinent to the planning and delivery of care to adults with mental health needs.
    • Awareness of the impact of the health economies on service planning and delivery.
    • Knowledge of the recovery principles and its application to adults.
