Due to the recent promotion of the current post holder, we are looking to appoint a new full time and permanent Quality Lead to Laurel Ward at the Redwoods Centre. We are looking for a registered mental health nurse who has the ability to professionally challenge clinical quality issues, whilst demonstrating an excellent level of professional enquiry. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate excellent communication and organisational skills, whilst always upholding our Trust Values. The Quality Lead has the full support of the Modern Matron, and there are many development and training opportunities available.

Main duties of the job

Within the area of clinical specialism;
  • To ensure the maintenance and monitoring of service standards.
  • Collect and collate data / information effectively for the purpose of audit and service performance.
  • To contribute towards research in the area of expertise.
  • To identify and evaluate, with others, areas for potential service improvement and any cost improvement and agree further action
  • To lead the development of service standards and policy, including benchmarking, and identify areas for potential service improvement.
  • To promote shared decision making with Service User involvement in all aspects of their care.
  • To identify issues of concern at work and alert appropriate personnel.
  • To present a positive image of the team, service and trust.
  • To ensure the availability of clinical supervision and preceptorship.
  • To ensure structures are in place for effective appraisal, personal development and performance management in conjunction with the Team leader and MDT team.
  • To assess and plan care in a manner that is consistent with evidence based practice, policies and procedures and the management of risk.

Job description Job responsibilities

Leadership
  • To provide appropriate advice to team staff, multi-disciplinary and management groups.
  • To monitor and evaluate practice based on contemporary and current trends and initiate changes in the light of these findings.
  • To ensure that all statutory and professional responsibilities of the NMC Codes of Conduct are met alongside other professional related bodies.
  • To promote, encourage and develop integration between community and inpatient services.
  • Facilitate effective early discharge planning from inpatient units.
  • Encourage and facilitate multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working.
  • In conjunction with the ward Manager and the Matron, monitor and manage the performance of the team and individual team members, to ensure achievements of Trust organisational targets/objectives.
  • Undertake clinical supervision and ensure appropriate clinical / professional supervision arrangements are in place for nursing staff.
  • Ensure compliance with the Trusts objectives in relation to the governance agenda, achieving a continuous process of monitoring and improving safe effective care delivery
  • Encourage staff to share good practice, develop ideas to improve services and promote research.
  • Maintain a strong overview on environmental standards and address any issues relating to safety, dignity, poor quality and poor hygiene and Infection Control.
  • Participate in the on-site Duty Nurse Manager rota; providing out of hours senior managerial / clinical advice, guidance and support on site. To be the first point of contact for fire, medical and psychiatric emergencies and coordinate Section 136 assessments as required.
  • Deputise for the Ward Manager/Matron at Trust wide meetings as necessary.

  • Promote service audit, evaluation and research
  • Ensure robust risk assessment and management processes are in place in accordance with policies.
  • Where applicable ensure all RCPsych Aims standards are met and deliver a regular review/audit of the action plan.
  • Ensure the team clinical outcome measures are being met via audit and take action to meet any deficits; to share the outcomes with the whole team.
  • Undertake mandatory training and have an appropriate personal development plan in place.

  • To support the ward manager to evaluate the clinical decisions made regarding training budgets / quality initiatives and analyse for any potential cost saving or cost improvements.

  • To act as an advanced practitioner with regard to evidence based nursing approaches.
  • To act as an autonomous practitioner in requesting input from other professionals across multiple services to support the delivery of care.
  • To utilise expert clinical knowledge and nursing skills to provide assessment, intervention and clinical guidance as appropriate.
  • To work with MDTs in the management of care and respond to changes in service users health.
  • To act in a manner to ensure that customs, individuality, values, sexuality and spiritual beliefs, are actively respected and that service users are supported to fulfil these.
  • To identify and provide intervention and emotional support for service users.
  • To create, develop and maintain professional supportive relationships with all members of staff with other professionals and agencies to enhance recovery.

  • Risk Assessment
  • To understand the range of risks potentially faced by the service user group
  • To work in partnership with others to identify and assess the nature, location and seriousness of risks and to advise on appropriate action.
  • To recognise potential crisis situations and act responsively and responsibly, to resolve the situation.
  • To contribute to the CPA process and support service users, and others, through this.
  • To be aware of the potential for vulnerability and abuse amongst the service users/families and use the local policy to inform appropriate personnel in line with safeguarding policies.
  • To work with other members of the multi-agency team to plan, monitor and review the effectiveness of the risk management plan
  • To take all possible precautions to safeguard the welfare and safety of staff, service users, visitors and the public, by implementing all policies related to health, safety, security and risk.

  • To receive clinical supervision and participate in appraisal and performance development conversations.

  • Systems and equipment
  • Required to use VDU equipment for substantial periods of time
  • Required to input into the electronic trust health record.
  • Use Health Roster to plan and maximise the use of staffing resources by developing staff rotas, making adjustments as necessary to ensure safe staffing levels are maintained at all times. Carry out monthly lock down to authorise shifts worked.

  • Regularly undertake the assessment, planning and delivery of care for people experiencing complex mental and physical health related conditions
  • Undertake NMC re-validation sign off for nurses in the team
  • Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of clinical processes within the team.

  • Communicate policies and practical procedures within the team and externally to ensure effective understanding and implementation.
  • This will involve regular contact and exchange of complex, confidential and sensitive information between staff, service users, carers, general public and internal/external agencies, where tact and diplomacy is required in a form that is appropriate to them and the situation and constructively manages barriers to effective communication.
  • Maintain a position of integrity and confidentiality at all times, communicating effectively and keeping accurate and complete records that are consistent with relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
