NHFT Hand Therapists make a difference every day to the lives of the patients they see. We are proud of our Hand Therapists who provide increasingly complex care for patients, to enable the patient to take control of their treatment plan and progress their recovery.

We are looking for Hand Therapist with a passion for high quality care to work within our MSK Hand Therapy Team. We would be interested in applications from newly qualified Occupational Therapists or Physiotherapist. To ensure the most successful introduction into the role we offer a structured clinical induction that includes shadowing, 1:1 tutorials and access to external courses and qualifications, as well as formal supervision and protected CPD time.

The post holder is expected to be responsible for providing high quality specialist Hand Therapy assessment and treatment to patients with hand/wrist dysfunction, injury including orthopaedic conditions and fractures, and rheumatology, through advice, exercises, and splinting.

Main duties of the job

Working life

As a Hand Therapist, you'll
  • Hold your own caseload working across the sites
  • Assess patients progress, reassess, and alter treatment as required
  • Setting patients goals to achieve the best possible outcome for returning to the activities that are important
  • Provide appropriate exercise programmes
  • Fabricate thermoplastic splints, as well as issue off the shelf alternatives
  • Be professionally accountable for the delivery of care
  • Utilise technology to enable you to update records as you go

The service aims to provide an excellent standard of care that supports patients across our communities. In Northamptonshire you will work as part of an integrated skill mix team in order to support the service and focus on delivering quality outcomes and improving the patient experience. You'll play a vital role in the delivery of our Rheumatology pathway, offering group classes and 1:1 sessions.

The Hand Therapy Team consists of Band 7 Team Lead, Band 6 Hand Therapists, and administration Support. The team covers Four clinics across the County, providing not only the highest quality of care but placing the emphasis on empowering and enabling patients to enhance their treatment plan.

Person Specification Knowledge and Experience Essential
  • Degree, BSc Hons in Occupational Therapy
  • HCPC Registered
  • Evidence of CPD and recent, relevant, training courses
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and CQC and its implication for services
Desirable
  • Good knowledge based skills of Rheumatology
  • Good knowledge based skills of anatomy
  • BAHT membership
  • NHS experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of the importance of the audit process
Skills and Abilities Essential
  • Good written and verbal communication skills for providing and receiving complex information and ability to liaise effectively with other professionals and patients
  • Computer literate on Office 365
  • Initiative and problem solving skills
  • Experience of engaging and communicating effectively with patients, colleagues and MDT
  • Integrate theory and practice and challenge current practice constructively (Use of models).
