We have received additional funding in our SLT youth justice service to provide early intervention to young people in school years 7-9 as part of the 'SAFE' taskforce.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Speech and Language Therapist to join the new Newham Youth Justice SLT Service within the 'SAFE' taskforce. SAFE targets vulnerable young people, often with hidden or unrecognised speech, language and communication needs in school years 7-9, The post holder will work in close partnership with the band 7 Highly Specialist SLT in developing this brand new early intervention speech and language therapy service, refining pathways/ models of provision to support young people.

This is a mixed post, split across the SAFE service and the main schools service,where the caseload is varied. The post-holder will have responsibility for designated schools where they will provide specialist assessment, diagnosis and management of Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and will be responsible for supporting a range of young people, parents and multiagency partners. Training for school staff and families is a crucial part of the service we deliver. There will also be opportunity to provide support to more junior staff and students within the service.

The childrens speech and language therapy service has a strong multi-agency work ethic with other services both within the trust and with partner agencies, and offers services across a wide range of care groups in the borough.

Person Specification Education/ Qualification Essential
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification or equivalent
  • Health Professions Council - Licence to Practice
Experience Essential
  • Relevant experience at post graduate level
  • Relevant experience of working within schools
  • Experience of working with other professionals
Knowledge and Skills Essential
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - including observation, listening and empathy skills
  • Negotiation and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrates good analytical and reflection skills
  • Well-developed concentration skills
  • Good presentation skills, both written and verbal, including ability to write clear and concise reports
  • Good organisational and prioritisation skills
  • Working knowledge of relevant information technology e.g. word , excel. email
  • Good auditory discrimination skills and ability to transcribe speech phonetically
