You are invited to apply to a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist post in the Eating Disorders Service. The post-holder will work as an integrated member of the multidisciplinary team, providing specialist psychological assessment and evidence-based psychological interventions to clients of the Eating Disorders Service, across in-patient, day-patient and out-patient settings. The post-holder will also be involved in the new and exciting service development initiatives in the ED Community Team as part of Community Mental Health Transformation. There will be opportunities of teaching and training of other professionals within and outside the Trust. The post-holder will be closely supervised and supported by a Consultant Clinical Psychologist.

Main duties of the job

As an experienced clinical or counselling psychologist holding doctoral level professional qualifications, ensures the systematic provision of a highly specialist, multilevel clinical psychology service that is cost-effective, culturally appropriate and based on best clinical and professional practice and that meets Trust and Directorate objectives, national strategic, and policy guidelines, commissioner requirements and user and carer needs and expectations. To thereby help understand, prevent and ameliorate psychological distress and disorder and improve the mental health and well being of users of the Eating Disorders Service

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Satisfactory completion of a British Psychological Society accredited Doctoral Level postgraduate professional training course in clinical psychology (the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996; or Doctorate in Counselling Psychology), the completion of which includes the study of models of psychopathology, psychometric and neuropsychological assessment, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
Desirable
  • Post-doctoral training in one or more highly specialist areas of psychological practice / therapy.
Experience Essential
  • Substantial assessed experience of working as a qualified clinical/counselling psychologist post- qualification, with additional experience working at the senior (Band 8a) level.
  • Experience of highly specialist psychological assessment and individual and group-based treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including primary and secondary/ specialist care and inpatient/residential, outpatient and community team settings.
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.
  • Experience of representing psychology within a multidisciplinary context.
Desirable
  • Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.
  • Experience of working therapeutically with 'difficult to treat' clients.
Knowledge and Skills Essential
  • Skills in the use of highly complex methods of psychological assessment commensurate with doctoral level training, including specialist clinical interviewing, behavioural observation, complex psychometric testing and specialist neuropsychological testing.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) including the ability to empathically, sensitively and effectively communicate clinical and condition related information to clients, their families, carers and professional colleagues (within and outside the NHS) that is extremely complicated or technical; extremely sensitive and potentially distressing to the recipient; or that is extremely contentious or challenging.
  • Skills in providing consultation and advice from a psychological perspective to members of other professional and non-professional groups
  • Awareness and understanding of the differential needs of people from diverse populations in relation to age, gender, race, sexual orientation and identity, etc.
  • Knowledge and skills in participating in or leading on service development and delivery
Desirable
  • Highly developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific 'difficult to treat' groups (e.g. personality disorder, challenging behaviour, dual diagnoses, people with additional disabilities etc).
Personal Essential
  • Ability to interact and to build and sustain relationships with people with mental health problems and associated disabilities.
  • Is a 'team player' and has demonstrated ability to work and deliver to team and organisational objectives
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism, and to reflect on and manage own emotions and those of others, when faced by highly distressing material, problems and circumstances (e.g. when dealing with family breakdown, sexual abuse) on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism, and to reflect on and manage own emotions and those of others, when faced by challenging behaviour, including frequent verbal abuse and occasional threatened physical abuse.
