We are delighted to announce this exciting new Band 7 Community Mental Health Lead OT opportunity in Milton Keynes.

Due to an exciting new development we would like to announce an opportunity for this role and OT in community mental health services in the development of a new OT team. This team will work across the mental health Hub to provide OT assessments and interventions. The team will focus primarily on the provision of OT with an element of Key worker responsibility where OT expertise is required. This new development will enable better access to OT for all those who use the mental health hub and support with their recovery journey.

This new role provides lots of opportunity for growth and development both clinically and as a leader. The post holder will sit within the community mental health hub which offers help and support for patients requiring secondary Mental Health Services in Milton Keynes. The post holder will also support our cohort of community OT's and work closely with our inpatient mental health Lead OT in promoting Occupational Therapy and providing clinical leadership.

Main duties of the job

Community Mental Health Services in Milton Keynes have undergone extensive transformation and are pleased to announce the new Milton Keynes Community Mental Health Hub. The Adult Mental Health Community redesign is part of an initiative to improve the quality of care received by people with mental health needs in their local community. The national direction of travel, outlined in the NHS Long Term Plan, is towards the provision of more integrated, personalised and place-based care.

Within the HUB there are 3 pathways dependant on services users needs and not diagnosis. All service users are able to access interventions such as Peer Support, Individual Placement Support, Coaching, Specialist Therapy and ongoing support etc. Interventions are delivered both as groups and individual 1:1 sessions, with a focus on a trauma informed holistic approach to health care. The HUB works closely with third sector agencies including the Crisis Caf in Milton Keynes, local VCSE as well as MKUH and the Local Authority.

The post holder will need to have an excellent knowledge and experience of the OT process, mental health conditions and legislation. You will need to demonstrate the ability to support and apply a holistic approach to assessing and supporting the health and social needs of people experiencing severe and enduring mental illness.

Job description Job responsibilities

The services offered within community mental health will be provided in line with the principles and ethos of recovery and social inclusion.

You will contribute their specialist knowledge and expertise in supporting this approach and will ensure that all interventions amplify an individuals self-management skills.
  • To be involved with the development and implementation of the complex emotional needs pathway, including development and facilitation of groups and managing a caseload.
  • To manage a defined clinical caseload of service users using evidence based and service user-centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate treatment.
  • To provide professional and clinical leadership, and expertise to the occupational therapists working within Milton Keynes community mental health services.
  • To work effectively in partnership with a range of agencies and community providers that support service users in their recovery
  • To work in conjunction with the Borough Professional Lead OT and other Lead OTs in the Trust to support the development of and promote evidence-based OT within mental health.
  • To be an active participant of the community mental health hubs senior team
  • To provide training and education to occupational therapists and other professionals with regard to how occupation may assist the recovery of service users
  • To jointly work with other Lead OTs in community services in CNWL to develop services including specific projects, audit and research
  • To act as an educator to students on practice placement.


Person Specification Education and Qualifications Essential
  • Degree/Diploma in Occupational Therapy.
  • HCPC registered Occupational Therapist
  • Practice Placement Educator's Course.
Desirable
  • Post graduate training specific to clinical specialty
  • Management & Leadership training.
Previous Experience Essential
  • Significant post qualification experience working in mental health services.
  • Experience in leading and/or developing a service/component of a service
  • Experience in using a range of standardised OT assessments including MOHO assessments
  • Experience of supervising and appraising staff / unqualified staff; recruitment and workforce planning
Desirable
  • Experience in a variety of mental health settings
Skills and Knowledge Essential
  • Individual and group work assessment and intervention skills.
  • Effective leadership skills through the management of designated projects, audits and research.
  • Clear concept of Occupational Therapy and models of practice.
Desirable
  • Training in psychological therapies e.g. DBT, CBT
  • Car driver or use of motorised transport
