Rotational Occupational Therapist - Band 5 - 37.5 hours - Permanent

Due to exciting developments within the Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, we are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic and hard-working occupational therapist to join our well-established, friendly team.

This post is for a Band 5 Occupational Therapy rotation. The rotations are 6 monthly and specialities include Medicine, Orthopaedics, Surgery, Acute & Inpatient Stroke Rehabilitation, Community Neuro Rehabilitation and Community inpatient rehabilitation.

The successful candidate will work through these rotations developing their skills assessing patient's function, environment and determining any equipment, support or ongoing rehabilitation needs. There will also be opportunities to contribute to service development projects and we welcome new ideas and initiative.

We are therefore looking for applicants who are highly motivated and will work with us to provide a high standard of patient care. We offer a preceptorship programme and exciting training opportunities to support your development; as well as regular supervisions, peer review, in-service training and appraisal.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit a motivated Occupational Therapist to join our B5 rotation. The successful candidate will be required to complete relevant Occupational Therapy assessments, derive and deliver treatment plan, provide advice and be responsible for safe discharge planning of patients across acute and community services in Tameside and Glossop. They will manage a caseload of patients, with regular supervision, using evidence based/client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.

The rotations included in this post are as follows:

Acute medicine, Acute Orthopaedics, Inpatient Stroke rehab, Intermediate Care and community neuro rehab.

Although the majority of these rotations currently work weekdays, there are rotations that will require minimal weekend working.

As this post does include community-based rotations it is essential for the post holder to be a car driver.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • To provide skilled occupational therapy assessment, treatment, advice and discharge planning across acute and community services in Tameside and Glossop.
  • To manage a caseload of patients, with regular supervision. Using evidence based/client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions
  • To represent the occupational therapy department in the interdisciplinary team, providing advice to other health professionals
  • To delegate appropriate work to untrained staff across disciplines, within the multi-disciplinary team
  • To be responsible for maintaining own records of intervention in care pathways and for completing own contact data

  • To work in close partnership with Multi-disciplinary colleagues, social services colleagues and voluntary agencies communicating highly confidential and complex information
  • To provide reports as appropriate for other agencies e.g. social services.
  • To communicate effectively with all other health sector and outside agencies for information exchange/ gathering and problem solving
  • To communicate with patients/service users/carers/relatives in any means required in a sensitive and appropriate manner (verbal, gesture, written)

Responsibility for Patient Care
  • To gain consent from patients and negotiate agreed goals and treatment plans
  • To assess, plan, implement, analyse and review complex situations under supervision
  • To evaluate treatment approach and adjust accordingly
  • To communicate sensitively with patients and their families
  • To manage patients with chronic disease and have the ability to know when to refer to other agencies and liaise with other members of the team appropriately
  • To be responsible for engaging clients in therapy sessions using listening and communication skills, to plan, implement, analyse and review appropriate Occupational therapy intervention utilising regular supervision sessions
  • To plan and prioritise own client caseload, managing own time effectively
  • To be responsible for the safety and welfare of patients, colleagues and self at all times in accordance with professional standards and Trust policy
  • To attend in-service training and mandatory training as per the Trust requirements
  • To be responsible for maintaining accurate records of intervention in care-pathways in accordance with Trust policy and professional standards
  • To maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with the Data protection act and professional standards
  • Assist patients /service users/carers/relatives during incidental contacts.

Planning and organising
  • To be responsible for the organisation and prioritisation of own workload
  • To act as a lead within own specialty and to assist the team to be proactive and develop an enthusiastic working environment
  • To assist in the training of other colleagues as appropriate
  • To demonstrate good time management and organisational skills
  • Organise and plan own day to day workload or activities in order to meet the demands of the job role.

Responsibilities for Physical and / or Financial Resource
  • To assess for, prescribe and issue aids and equipment as per Trust policy
  • To use therapeutic equipment safely and be responsible for its safe keeping and maintenance
  • Ensure safe and efficient use of equipment, resources and consumables at all times.

Responsibility for Policy and Service Development and Implementation
  • To have a working knowledge of Trust policies and procedures and College of Occupational Therapy code of conduct and adhere to these at all times
  • To participate in personal development review and be responsible for complying with agreed personal development plan to meet set objectives
  • To actively contribute to in-service training by attendance and participation. Attend peer group reviews and external courses
  • To participate in departmental staff meetings, unit development meetings and departmental audits
  • To be aware of, comment on and/or actively participate in changes on policies, procedures or service developments.
  • To embrace and support line management and the department in making service improvements effective within the workplace.

Responsibilities for Human Resources and Leadership
  • To utilise clinical supervision appropriately
  • To maintain own competency to practice through CPD activities and maintain CPD portfolio which reflects personal development
  • To be accountable for own action, with regular supervision, to be accountable for delegation of work to unqualified staff
  • Support new or less experienced work colleagues to adapt to the workplace.

Responsibilities for Teaching and Training
  • Participate in training and development activities that are relevant to the job role
  • Deliver education and training to patients, their carers and other appropriate agencies, in relation to the role of an occupational therapist, the patients condition, healthy lifestyle choices and self-management

Responsibilities for data and information resources
  • Comply with the standards expected by the organisation, in relation to the inputting of activity data
  • To keep accurate patient records

Research, Development and Audit
  • To participate in clinical audit projects as required by Tameside Hospital Foundation Trust
  • Maintain own professional standards and continued professional development file.

Physical Skills and Effort
  • To hold a full drivers license and be able to insure for business use purposes
  • To keep up to date and uphold manual handling techniques
  • To be able to use a computer and relevant software packages relevant to the job role

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Must possess HCPC qualification or equivalent
  • Must possess or be working towards a HCPC registration
  • Must have previous relevant clinical experience
  • Able to give evidence of basic I.T Skills
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Effective problem solving skills
  • Must have experience working as part of an MDT
  • Good time management skills
  • Must have excellent communication skills
  • Previous Occupational Therapy Experience at B5 level
