This is for a full-time vacancy for a newly qualified mental health nurse or occupational therapist to work within the Liaison Psychiatry service in William Harvey, Ashford. This role will give the individual the chance to develop their knowledge and understanding of a broad range of mental health, psychological problems, assessment and risk management skills. This is an exciting opportunity for a newly qualified Band 5 practitioner to develop their skills and knowledge.

Main duties of the job

JOB PURPOSE
  • For newly qualified practitioners wishing to develop their knowledge and understanding of a broad range of mental health and psychological problems, assessment and risk management skills and delivering a range of evidence based psychosocial interventions.
  • Work as part of a psychiatric liaison team providing a liaison and assessment service on 7 days as a 24 hour service.
  • Offer an assessment service to patients aged 18+ (with no upper age limit) presenting at the general hospital with a broad range of mental health and diagnosed psychiatric illnesses under supervision and guidance of Senior Practitioners to develop your knowledge and skills.
  • Providing a mental health consultation, liaison and advice service throughout the departments with support from senior colleagues.
  • Delivering a range of evidence based psychosocial interventions to individual patients as required and assisting and supporting general hospital colleagues in making decisions about treatment and care in complex situations.
  • Representing mental health services within the Hospitals.
  • Providing a communication structure between secondary mental health services, primary care and non-statutory services, as a means of ensuring the highest possible standards of patient care.
  • To achieve set learning objective and outcomes as part of your continued development within this role.

ORGANISATION AND CONTEXT

The post holder will work as part of a multi-disciplinary Liaison team, with their line management provided by a dedicated Liaison Psychiatry Team Manager. Senior medical support will be offered by the associated Consultant Psychiatrist. As part of this developmental post, the post holder will spend 2 shifts per week for the first 6 months working on an acute psychiatric ward to enable them to complete their competencies for their preceptorship. The post holder will be enrolled on the NQN KMPT Preceptorship Programme.

KEY OBJECTIVES CLINICAL
  • Daily promotion of a positive, supportive and non-stigmatizing culture in relation to mental ill health and psychiatric illnesses
  • To provide psychosocial assessment of patients presenting with a broad range of mental health, psychological problems and psychiatric illnesses encompassing highly developed risk assessment and management skills under supervision from Senior Practitioners
  • Daily provision of a wide range of clinical skills and psychosocial interventions to patients who present with mental health problems in line with NIMHE, NICE and NHS guidance
  • Daily provision of a comprehensive mental health consultation-liaison service to clinical teams providing clear and concise advice regarding the appropriate management of individuals referred to Liaison Psychiatry with support from Senior Practitioners
  • Provide regular assistance to clinical teams in the formulation of appropriate plans of care or decision making where patients are exhibiting complex needs with a mental health component
  • To regularly provide prompt referrals to statutory and non-statutory agencies utilising a wide range of follow up options in line with the principles of the recovery model and social inclusio

PROFESSIONAL
  • Maintain accurate written records and statistics to ensure that service user details and details of care given are recorded in notes and on the trust database(s) in line with trust policy
  • Ensure the physical health needs of service users are met, including advice, support and health education to both service users and carers
  • Provide and receive complex and sensitive information from service users, carers or other professionals and agencies, on a daily basis
  • Ensure that psychological intervention or treatment is offered to service users as outlined in National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines
  • Work with and support other members of the multi-disciplinary team, using clinical judgements in the absence of key members of the team, including medical staff
  • Ability to access profession specific CPD activities that support professional registration
  • Ability and commitment to access professional supervision
  • Regular participation in quality assurance initiatives with the emphasis on service development and user satisfaction
  • Personal responsibility for completion of specific clinical projects undertaking all the necessary tasks such as facilitating meetings, liaison or negotiation with other staff/stakeholders
  • Personal accountability to ensure that clinical practice accords to local policy, national policy and professional code of conduct
  • Regular integration and liaison with Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Teams including clinical practice
  • Facilitate and formulate the delivery of care with support from senior practitioners and team managers.
  • Undertaking other duties as appropriate to the post as requested by senior clinicia

  • Ensure sufficient time is allocated to receive clinical and managerial supervision

  • To use VDU equipment on a daily basis
  • Ability to travel on a regular basis
  • Working to tight / short deadlines within a demanding environment
  • Intense emotional effort to manage and respond to challenging behaviour of mentally ill people in crisis on a regular basis. This may include exposure to verbal and physical aggression on occasion

MOST CHALLENGING PART OF THE JOB
  • Dealing effectively with mentally ill people in crisis who may sometimes be in distress, challenging and reluctant to co-operate
  • Providing clinical direction to a large and diverse general hospital workforce that may have limited knowledge regarding mental health issues
  • Balancing the demands of two NHS Trusts in order to meet service users needs
  • Giving of distressing information to patients and carers on a regular basis

Person Specification Training, Qualifications and Registration Essential
  • Registered Professional Qualification in Mental Health Nursing or Occupational Therapy, including registration with the relevant regulatory body. Registered General Nurse (as a dual trained practitioner)
Experience Essential
  • Evidence of qualification with NMC PIN already in place
Desirable
  • Experience of student nurse placement or working in an unqualified role in Liaison Psychiatry or other mental health setting
Knowledge and Skills Essential
  • Up to date knowledge of national and local guidance relevant to Liaison Psychiatry (e.g. parity of esteem agenda, Crisis Care Concordat, National Suicide Prevention Strategy, Relevant NICE Guidelines) A working knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act and Mental Health Act, Duty of Candour. Knowledge of the effects of physical health and long-term conditions on mental health and wellbeing
Desirable
  • Experience of assessing patients in a clinical setting, to be familiar with the assessment process / models
