We are recruiting a Band 7 Clinical / Counselling Psychologist or CBT Therapist, and welcome applications from trainees qualifying in 2023.

Tower Hamlets Psychological Therapies Service provides group and individual therapy to adults in secondary care with complex difficulties, including depression, anxiety and trauma.

We are looking for someone who can be part of the development of a new service model which will meet the needs of the local population, through working closely with the locality neighbourhood teams and the Community Psychology Service. Experience in CBT is essential, and experience in DBT, ACT, CFT, Narrative Therapy and EMDR is welcome.

The post will suit someone who is flexible and is committed to continuous improvement in co-production with service users and carers. We are committed to supporting the professional development of staff, and offer various CPD opportunities.

This role can be done with a remote working component, and we support flexible and part-time working arrangements.

Main duties of the job

To contribute to assessment of clients referred to the service, and offer both group and 1:1 therapy.

CBT experience is essential, with additional training or experience in other modalities desirable. This will include ensuring delivery of screening assessments, interventions and specialist assessment and formulation, in line with professional competencies.

To develop and support the psychological work of other staff through teaching, training supervision and consultation.

To provide specialist advice to NHS and voluntary sector agencies concerning the assessment, treatment and management of service users.

Follow defined practices and procedures under the management and co-ordination of a senior psychotherapist/psychologist. To work autonomously within professional guidelines and exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of psychological practice.

To take part in Quality Improvement projects within the team. To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research.

Participate in CPD and other developmental activities, keeping up to date with relevant psychological research and national guidance (DoH, NICE etc).

Person Specification Education/ Qualification/ Training Essential

• Accredited training as a CBT Therapist, and Core mental health profession, or a demonstrable working knowledge of NHS values, clinical structures in secondary mental health care, referral pathways, how services are funded and the roles of NHS professionals Or
• Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) or BPS statement of Equivalence and able to demonstrate eligibility for BPS CPsychol (Chartered Psychologist)
• Or Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and able to demonstrate eligibility for BPS CPsychol (Chartered Psychologist)
• and Full registration with either: 1. HCPC (Psychologists and Arts Therapists) 2. BABCP

Experience Essential

• Experience of providing specialist psychological assessments (brief screening and in-depth) interventions to patients with complex problems, including treatment within a CBT modality.
• Experience of developing and delivering both longer term and time-limited group interventions.
• Experience of ensuring equality of access and acceptable intervention to diverse populations.
• Experience of working with a wide variety of patient groups presenting with the full range of clinical severity
• Experience of co-production with service users in the development and delivery of services

Knowledge Essential

• Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment including the use of theoretical models to analyse information and to develop formulations upon which to base choice of treatment.
• Understanding of the basic principles underlying at least two main models of psychological therapy and knowledge of clinical applications of the models.
• Working knowledge of the practices and approaches of other key disciplines, professions and agencies involved in the care and management network, including medical, employment, social, educational and criminal justice systems.
• Ability to provide a culturally appropriate and nonstigmatising service including an awareness of the potential impact of discrimination and disadvantage on mental health.

Skills Essential

• Knowledge of and skills in people participation, understanding big and little I in service user involvement.
• Skills in the effective communication of highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to a wide variety of recipients in a range of settings within and outside the NHS, including the ability to produce comprehensive, sensitive and coherent letters, reports and associated documentation, and to overcome barriers to understanding and acceptance.
• Skills in providing advice and consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
