You will provide a Specialist Speech and Language Therapy service to a complex caseload of adults with learning disabilities as part of a wider multidisciplinary team.

You will work alongside other professionals to improve and promote the health of adults with learning disabilities. We encourage you to participate in research, quality improvement projects and audit relevant to your area of clinical work.

It is essential you have a Degree or equivalent in Speech and Language Therapy with professional membership and registration with HCPC and RCSLT. Postgraduate experience/training in dysphagia is essential.

The hours of this post are worked flexibly within Monday to Friday.

Main duties of the job

To utilise theory, evidence-based literature and research to support evidence based practice in individual work and work with other team members.To monitor and review the effectiveness of the clinical work undertaken.To participate in data collection, audit, service evaluation and clinical research.To undertake project management, including clinical audit and service evaluation to help develop service provision.To work with the MDT to develop and maintain a philosophy of care for SLT services in line with service and pathway objectives.To propose and contribute to the development of local clinical guidelines and procedures related to this specialist clinical area for SLT.To ensure that all interventions reflect current SLT best practice and adhere to professional standards.To use assessment material and information to offer differential diagnosis in patients with highly complex presentations and needs.To lead in the delivery of a comprehensive and effective speech and language therapy service.To access appropriate training and supervision to maintain and improve skills in dysphagia assessment and treatment.

Person Specification Education and Qualifications Essential

• Recognised Speech and Language Qualification
• Registered with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC
• Registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)
• Recognised post-graduate dysphagia qualification or accredited training to RCSLT dysphagia competency Level C or above or equivalent

Experience Essential

• Experience of working as part of a Multi-Disciplanary Team
• Experience of working with adults with special needs i.e. Learning Disabilities, Autism, Mental Health
• Experience of using alternative and augmentative communication supports
• Significent post graduate experience
• Experience of supervising other SLT's and Assistants

Desirable

• Experience in delivery of structured groups
• Experience of working with people with Mental illness or personality disorder and/or challenging behaviour.

Knowledge and Skills Essential

• Specialist knowledge of dealing with complex cases in terms of dual diagnosis, presentation and the effects of the enviroment.
• Specialist knowledge of issues regarding challenging behaviour
• Knowledge of clinical evidence base and relevant literature
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team, both university and multi- disciplinary
• Ability to communicate effectively with other professionals and carers.

Desirable

• An awareness of relevant legislation e.g Mental Health Act
• Research and/or clinical audit skills
• Skills in developing/delivering structured groups
• Willingness and ability to develop a speacialist area of expertise and clinical service
