This is an exciting opportunity for a Speech and Language Therapist to join the Forensic Community Service based at Roseberry Park Hospital. The service provides assessment and treatment for people who are within the Secure Inpatient Service and the community.

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic person to join our growing services in Health and Justice in a band 5 - 6 development post. This vacancy is open to either a newly qualified SLT (B5) or an experienced SLT (B6) wanting to further develop their skills working within mental health and justice. You will be supported in your development by a Clinical Lead SLT and work towards a developmental framework within an agreed time scale.

The role will involve assessment and management of dysphagia and communication difficulties with adults with mental health and complex needs, including autism, learning disability and head injury providing relevant training and service development.

You will be part of a dynamic SLT service in Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, with well-defined peer support, supervision systems and CPD opportunities.

You will have a degree in Speech and Language Therapy and have significant experience including experience working with service users in mental health or learning disabilities with complex needs

Main duties of the job

(Including but not exclusively)

To work as an integral part of the Forensic Community service.

Undertake complex service user assessments including interpretative assessment techniques and interventions

Develops and implements specialist interventions for service users.

With support from Clinical Specialist to manage a specialist caseload from assessment to discharge within community and in patient settings. Service users may have multiple needs with a combination of physical and mental health or learning disabilities. Service users may demonstrate behaviours that challenge and may have difficult family situations of relevance. Service users may engage in violence or self- harming behaviour

Responsible for ensuring the highest professional standards and attitudes towards the care of service users are maintained at all times and that care is delivered in accordance with evidence based practice by all members of the team.

Speech and Language Therapy is a new and developing area within health and justice service. You will be part of a wider Health and Justice SLT team who work into a range of settings.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Registration with HCPC
  • Clinical Supervisory Skills course
  • Numeracy, Literacy and ITQ level 2 (or equivalent)
Desirable
  • Membership of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
Experience Essential
  • Post graduate dysphagia training and experience in relevant clinical area
  • Experience of working with adults with LD and/or MH difficulties
  • Experience of teaching/training
  • Experience of providing clinical supervision
Desirable
  • Post graduate dysphagia training
  • Experience of working in a MDT
  • Experience of supervising students
  • Experience in prison setting / forensic setting
Knowledge Essential
  • National guidance and key standards in own specialist area
  • Clinical Risk Assessment and Management and its application in practice.
Desirable
  • Awareness of personality disorder /OPD pathway
  • Knowledge of communication difficulties and impact on offender health
