We are looking for an enthusiastic Band 5 therapist with experience or a NQP to work with adults who a learning disability, based in Bedfordshire.

Main duties of the job

You will be working as part of an innovative and supportive team of speech and language therapists within a multidisciplinary setting, providing community services for adults who have a learning disability.

You should be able to demonstrate an interest or experience of working with complex communication needs, challenging behaviour, AAC and be able to develop care plans to support individuals communication needs. This is a developmental post which will be able to support access to post graduate Dysphagia training after the first year in post.

We are able to offer you a friendly and supportive team environment with regular supervision meetings, multidisciplinary working, regular team meetings and an opportunity to develop your personal and clinical skills through a range of learning experiences including internal and external training, CPD programme and attendance at CENs.

Person Specification Educational/Qualification Essential
  • Recognised SLT Degree or equivalent
  • Health Professions Council Licence to Practice
  • Registered member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
Experience Essential
  • Relevant experience of assessment and intervention in adults with learning disabilities
Desirable
  • Experience and use of signing skills
  • Experience of multidisciplinary working
Knowledge/Skills Essential
  • Knowledge of a range of communication assessments and appropriate therapeutic interventions for adults with learning disabilities
  • Awareness of the principles of clinical governance/audit
  • Negotiation and problem solving skills
  • Standard IT skills
  • Able to travel across Bedfordshire
  • Able to communicate effectively with patients with communication problems where difficulties in understanding exist, using observation, listening and empathy.
  • Able to convey complex information clearly to clients, carers and other professionals both in verbal and written form.
Desirable
  • Counselling skills
  • Dysphagia management
