Are you a Trainee Counselling Psychologist looking for diversity in your clinical work? An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Counselling Psychologist in training to join our thriving Older Person's Psychology Team within CTMUHB, on a fixed-term basis. The successful candidate will sit in the Taff/Bridgend localities, working across Older Person's Mental Health, experiencing the breadth and diversity of clinical work that this specialty has to offer.

This post is supervised by a Counselling Psychologist and will provide paid placement experience for the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology.

The CTM UHB Older Person's Psychology Team consists of a supportive and passionate team of colleagues, including experienced Clinical and Counselling Psychologists,. We're a team who embraces change and opportunity, and are currently in an exciting period of service development. The successful candidate will be well supported and mentored by senior colleagues, and provided with a range of opportunities for career development.

The wider Psychology service within CTM UHB has undergone exciting developments in recent months and is a thriving department to sit within. We hold regular conferences throughout the year, where psychology teams across CTM UHB come together to share good practice and innovations within the trust and wider. We have close links with local Doctoral Clinical/Counselling Psychology programmes and provide regular training and placement opportunities to Trainees.

Main duties of the job

CTM UHB Older Person's Mental Health services are currently divided into five areas: Bridgend, Rhondda, Cynon, Taff and Merthyr - each area consists of an Older Person's Community Mental Health Team (OPCMHT) and Memory Assessment Service (MAS) and feeds into the Older Person's Mental Health inpatient wards within the health board. The successful candidate for this post will be located within the Bridgend and Taff Older Person's Mental Health Teams. The post holder will sit within well-established multi-disciplinary teams, providing specialist psychological knowledge to the team.

This role provides an opportunity for a Trainee Counselling Psychologist to work within the OPCMHT and MAS, providing a high quality psychology service to the team and locality population. This includes providing a psychological assessment and therapy services to older adults under secondary care mental health services (Part 2 of the Mental Health Measure, 2010), as well as consultation/training as required for staff within the wider team. The role also sits partly within MAS and the successful candidate will work towards providing Neuropsychological Assessment and pre-/post-diagnostic intervention as appropriate for those within the MAS pathway.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

This post is fixed term for 2 years to meet the needs of the service.

Although prior experience of working with Dementia would be useful, full training and supervision will be provided for this as placement experience.There is also potential for work on the Older Persons Mental Health inpatient wards as required.

Person Specification Qualifications/Knowledge Essential
  • Has secured DCOP training position with University of South Wales and is in the second or third year of training as a Counselling Psychologist.
  • 2:2 or above degree in Psychology
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to individuals with Mental Health and Learning Disabilities.
  • Developing knowledge and skills of complex risk assessments and management of risk
  • Knowledge and application of standardized assessments of outcome measures.
Desirable
  • Level 2 Counselling Certificate
  • Masters degree in Psychology
  • Record of publications in peer reviewed or academic or professional journals and/or books
Experience Essential
  • Experience of working with people with MHLD issues across the full range of care settings.
  • Experience of cognitive screening.
  • Experience of teaching, training, reflective practice.
  • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable
  • Experience of the application of psychology in different cultural contexts.
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
  • Experience of service evaluation.
