We're looking for a CAMHS Nurse/Mental Health Practitioner to work within our Crisis Team. The team is part of a supportive and innovative child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) in Southampton. The aim of this service is to support a child/young person in continuing with their mental health recovery at home with their families in the community and prevent a hospital admission due to the mental health crisis.

The post holder will be part of the CAMHS multi-disciplinary team delivering short term specialist mental health support for children and young people and their parents/carers to manage a period of mental health crisis.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate would be professionally registered and be supported to work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the team's policies and procedures.

The CAMHS team is a strong and supportive team and has excellent structures to offer regular supervision and support. Job description Job responsibilities

*To support staff within universal and targeted children's workforce.

*To exercise full responsibility and autonomy for assessments, formulation of systemic treatment, reviews and closing summaries and be accountable for professional actions and policies.

*To participate in the development of a high quality, responsive service for children, young people and their families/carers/friends where appropriate. This may include professionally advising and managing those aspects of the service where psychiatric and/or organizational issues need addressing

*To share responsibility for and to provide a Specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service within Specialist CAMHS.

*To be responsible for delivering specialist child and adolescent psychiatry in a way that is integrated with the work of other disciplines within the team.

*To be responsible where appropriate to liaise closely and integrate specialist child and adolescent psychiatry with the work of other agencies.

*To provide guidance and consultation to other professionals, contributing directly to individual programmes of care.

*To manage referrals and to assess the needs of the referred child or young person and to develop, implement and evaluate appropriate interventions

*To contribute a specialist child and adolescent psychiatric perspective in team and management discussions.

*To attend Core Group meetings and Team Around the Child meetings and other relevant meetings as required.

*To work or sit in constraint positions for substantial periods of time during interviewing and therapy sessions.

*To ensure children, young people and their carers/significant others are included in planning, implementation and evaluation of care.

*To ensure care is delivered in a person-centred manner ensuring the gender, ethnic cultural and spiritual needs of service users inform practice.

*To operate within the guidance and Code of Ethics of the relevant professional body

*To act in accordance with legal requirements contained within the Mental Health Act 1983, the Children's Act 1994 and other legislation

*To have knowledge of and act in accordance with Portsmouth City Safeguarding Children's Board.

*To participate in regular supervision systems and the Individual Appraisal Review and Continuing Professional Development.

*To ensure that care is delivered to incorporate health and social care policy.

*To be aware of and up to date with advances in research practice and development of interventions for mental health disorders and emerging mental health in children and young people.

*To participate in the self-harm rota as required

Communication

*To communicate effectively through written notes and reports and verbal communication with all relevant personnel involved in the YP's care.

*To possess IT skills in order to effectively communicate in writing with colleagues, other professionals and families in accordance with trust policies e.g., writing of comprehensive report.

*To liaise and joint work with colleagues, other professionals and agencies as required in relation to both clinical work and the wider agenda of working in partnership within a multi-agency framework.

*To participate in team clinical meetings in order to share expertise, promote good practice and the safety of clients.

*To participate in referrals meeting as required. Making clinical decisions as part of this group regarding the appropriateness of new referrals in line with referral criteria. Assessing the level of clinical need for referrals accepted and communicating outcomes to referrers.

Administrative

*Work positively with colleagues to maintain effective relationships.

*To participate in ongoing research and development within the team as appropriate.

*Ensure mandatory training is accessing as detailed by the Trust policy.

*Engage in annual appraisal process to support individual career and personal development.

*To comply with Trust policies and procedures and be familiar with and abide by all service policies, practices and procedure's laid down by CAMHS.

*To maintain legible, accurate and contemporaneous records with are dated and signed including entries in client record using system one.

*To participate in the collection of data and statistics.

*To care for and maintain the safety of any equipment used whilst fulfilling the requirements of the post.

Knowledge, Education and Training

*Undertake clinical work, training and personal development to maintain and develop clinical and leadership skills.

*Work at all times within Professional Code of Practice for your relevant professional body. Responsibility for maintaining professional knowledge and competency in all areas of work to maintain professional qualifications.

*Participate in appraisal and objective setting process and identify and meet PDP needs.

*Seek and receive regular planned management and clinical supervision.

*To complete mandatory training as required in Solent NHS Trust.

Management and Leadership

*To exercise full responsibility and autonomy for evidence-based treatment, reviews and closing summaries and be accountable for professional actions and policies.

*To participate in the development of a high quality responsive and accessible service for children, families and carers. This may include professionally advising and managing those aspects of the service where psychiatric and/or organisational issue need addressing.

*To take responsibility for management of systemic resources available to the service for example maintaining recording equipment /cameras employed in the assessment and treatment of families. This includes the safe use of specialist equipment and materials.

*To advise and participate in appropriate professional recruitment, short listing, interviewing and providing inductions.

*To initiate projects and implement service development.

*Informed consent is obtained where appropriate and documented in accordance with Trust procedures.

*New and replacement equipment is not used until it has been commissioned in accordance with Trust policy.

*Appropriate risk and other assessments are completed and documented in a timely manner in accordance with Trust policy.

*Defective equipment is reported and made safe without delay in accordance with Trust procedures

*Equipment is maintained in accordance with Trust policy.

*Infection prevention and control procedures are followed.

*All staff follow Trust clinical governance requirements.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Nurse qualification or other core qualification such as OT / Social Work and registration with relevant professional body
  • Postgraduate level of study/degree relevant to discipline or equivalent experience
Experience Essential
  • Knowledge and experience in child protection/safeguarding procedures, to recognise abuse and escalate appropriately within statutory timeframes
  • Crisis management skills
  • Community care experience
  • To hold a clinical caseload of complex health needs including mental health as a lead professional within a multi-agency team
Additional Criteria Essential
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, ability to receive and provide complex information which may be sensitive, contentious, where persuasive negotiation may be required and there could be barriers to understanding
  • Ability to work autonomously; prioritise workload, instruct and direct others, work is managed rather than supervised; works within clear code of practice
