An opportunity has arisen for an Urgent Care Nurse with a primary responsibility for the newly built Haven based in The Department of Psychiatry Eastbourne. This is a really exciting time to join the team when we are continuing to develop the core 24 model, to provide an enhanced Urgent Care Service that operates over 24 hours. Eastbourne Haven is a newly built building supporting Urgent Care Services and the community.

The Haven provides a safe, calm and therapeutic space which acts as an alternative to the A&E department and avoids long waiting times for the patients we provide a service to. The Haven takes referrals from the general hospital A&E department, Secamb, The Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment team, The Sussex Mental Health Line, our third sector provider Staying well and we also act as an Alternative Designated Place of Safety (ADPOS) for the police to bring people who have been detained under a section 136 .

Main duties of the job

The role also includes taking referrals from the general wards for people who have become mentally unwell whilst receiving care for a physical illness. or are experiencing a relapse of a previously diagnosed mental health condition.The post holder is also required to co-ordinate the shift on a rota basis and triage the referrals coming into the service and establish medical fitness to assessThe post holder will provide mental health assessment, treatment, signposting and onward referral for patients who come to the Haven They will also provide education, training and information on mental health for general hospital staff working in A & E, medical & surgical assessment units and wards.We are looking for an individual with excellent communication skills, who is able to work autonomously and at pace within a wider multi-disciplinary team. Interest in working age and older peoples mental health and willingness to develop your expertise further in this specialty is essential. Experience of working within Mental Health Liaison or a similar clinical environment would also be an advantage. About us

This is a permanent and full-time post (37.5 hours per week), however, alternative working arrangements such as job shares will be considered on an individual basis. The post-holder should be willing to work flexible hours and to work closely with the Mental Health Liaison Team patients as required to support delivery of the 24/7 Urgent Care Pathway for Mental Health. The Liaison team is based in The Department of Psychiatry, Eastbourne District General Hospital.

Job description Job responsibilities

As an Urgent Care Practitioner you will operate as an autonomous practitioner, undertaking comprehensive assessment and formulation, including risk assessment that leads to an agreed plan. You may provide a range of interventions including signposting, support, psychosocial interventions, therapeutic interview, and brief psychotherapeutic interventions. An integral part of this role includes effective liaison with other parts of the health system, including primary care, acute and secondary care teams, as well as social services, emergency services and non-statutory agencies. You will work closely with the acute hospital, acting as a single point of contact of referral and serve the agreed population of 18 plus. There will also be opportunities in teaching, education and assisting non mental health staff to respond to mental health needs more effectively.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Registered Nurse with current registration [mental health/LD/Adult], appropriate to the job role
  • Completion of Mentorship Course/ENB equivalent
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
Knowledge/Experience Essential
  • Significant post qualifying experience in the relevant care group
  • Experience of working alongside people with complex health problems in the designated care group
  • Experience of supervising staff
  • Experience of providing a range of clinical interventions to people in the designated care group with a variety of health problems
  • Experience of working consultatively with professionals
  • Experience of conducting clinical assessments including risk assessments
  • Experience of partnership working within and across various statutory and non statutory teams and agencies
  • Experience of working within the CPA process
  • Understanding of clinical governance
  • Previous experience of working in the community
