New Hire bonus £1500

The permanent posts are eligible for a £1500 New Hire Bonus. An initial payment of £500 will be paid in the first 1 month and a final payment of £1000 will be paid 1 year after your start date. This will be pro-rata for part-time posts. Internal applicants are not eligible.

With a strong ethos of clinical support and supervision, our dynamic team provides evidence-based advice, training and interventions to CYP, their families and education staff.

The Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy Service is a 0-19 service which assesses, supports, and provides therapy to children with speech, language, communication and feeding difficulties. We aim to provide services at a universal, targeted and specialist levels.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the independent management of a clinical caseload of pre-school and school-aged children in community settings. This may include clinics, pre-school settings, mainstream schools, and special schools in and around the area of Peterborough.

The client group is children who have a range of difficulties in understanding and/or using speech and language, including those who have SLCN associated with additional needs.

The post holder will contribute to multi-disciplinary team assessments and will work closely with colleagues in other teams to provide intervention to children on their caseload.

The key aims that this service aim to achieve are found below:
  • Children and young people accessing individual or group based interventions achieve their SLCN related individual goals and functional outcomes
  • Parents and carers are supported with appropriate information and skills to enable them to be effective primary communicative partners for their children and young people with needs at universal, targeted and specialist levels and achieve high parent/carer satisfaction rates
  • Using specialist knowledge and expertise to build skills in the wider workforce to ensure that they are confident in their role as facilitators of communication and are competent to deliver universal, targeted interventions and some elements of specialist programmes of intervention including individual and small group work
  • There are efficient and accessible systems to enable early identification of need both at an early developmental stage and also in terms of a rapid response to children and young people where concerns are raised at any age. Activity will include the training of others to identify need and providing pre-referral advice within community settings
  • Intervention is appropriate and timely, which may include direct or indirect with individuals and groups of individuals, delivered in the most functionally appropriate context, which is relative to specific need and in communication friendly environments


Person Specification Education/Qualifications Essential
  • Degree or equivalent in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Registered Member of RCSLT
  • Registered Member of HPC
  • Evidence of successful completion of short specialist courses
Desirable
  • Evidence of commitment to CPD
  • Membership of relevant Special Interest Group
  • Dysphagia training
Experience Essential
  • Experience working in community clinics, a range of different schools and preschools
  • Relevant experience post registration
  • Experience and evidence of working with children who have a range of complex needs
  • Experience of intervention appropriate for children with complex needs
Desirable
  • Previous experience working with children who use both Low and High Tech AAC
  • Previous experience of diagnostic assessment, as part of a team for children with suspected ASD
  • ADOS trained
Knowledge & Skills Essential
  • Well-established knowledge about developmental speech and language disorders.
  • Knowledge of assessment procedures relevant to the client groups.
  • Knowledge of a range of therapeutic interventions appropriate to the client groups.
  • Highly developed auditory perceptual skills and the ability to transcribe speech phonetically.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to convey sensitive or distressing information to parents/carers.
  • Knowledge of national professional standards, policies and procedures relevant to client group
Desirable
  • Computer literate
  • Knowledge of AAC (including Makaton signing)
  • Experience with coaching parents and practitioners.
