Prisons are one of the most challenging yet rewarding places for Pharmacy professionals to work. At HMP Birmingham we are looking to expand our team and develop an enhanced role for Pharmacy Technicians. This is an exciting time, so if you are looking for a role to develop your existing skills and learn something new in an environment that never stands still, then this is a perfect opportunity for you.

Main duties of the job

You will hold NVQ Level 3, BTEC in Pharmacy, or equivalent qualifications and have current registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) to be considered for this role.

A typical day will consist of
  • Administration of medications for both physical health and mental health conditions, including opioid substitute therapy and controlled medications
  • Medical history taking, physical health observations and screening services.
  • Completing in-possession medication risk assessments to support patients in being able to look after their own treatment but also to identify risk and reduce potential harm.
  • Participating in health promotion services, for example blood pressure monitoring, carrying out ECGs and phlebotomy services as well as supporting vaccination clinics.
  • Providing advice to patients and referring to relevant clinicians for complex issues and chronic disease specialist services

Supervision on a day-to-day basis will be provided by the Primary Care Nurse Team Lead and regular sessions provided in the on-site dispensary to maintain routine pharmacy competencies and appropriate professional supervision and management support.

The post requires an excellent team player who is flexible and has a tenacity to see tasks through to completion. If you are enthusiastic, motivated and ready for a challenge then you are the person we are looking for.
