The supernumerary role supports services where additional therapy support is required. The post enables occupational therapists to gain skills in a range of areas across the directorate with patients living with dementia of any age and other mental health needs. Occupational therapists provide services to a wide range of MHSOP areas including; inpatients, care homes, intensive treatment teams, community mental health teams, memory service and therapy intervention services,

Working hours are week day office hours.

Main duties of the job

The Occupational therapist works in a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive assessment and interventions which promotes recovery enabling patients to remain at home including supporting their positive mental and physical wellbeing.
  • To provide an occupational therapy service for older people with complex mental health needs who are referred to the service including providing duty cover for the team.
  • To carry out specialist occupational therapy assessment, goal setting, implementation of treatment programmes and evaluation.
  • To establish the needs of individuals referred to the service and plan care with colleagues from health, social services, families and the voluntary sector.
  • To represent and promote the specialist role of Occupational Therapy.

We welcome applications from experienced occupational therapists, including retire and return staff. Although the posts is advertised as full time we would encourage applications for part time employment too.

Contractual Requirements
Essential
  • A full UK driving license and vehicle for business use is required for this post

Qualifications
Essential
  • BSc/MSc/Diploma in OT
  • HCPC registration

Desirable
  • Practice Placement Educator

Further training
Essential
  • Evidence of regular relevant CPD activities

Work experience
Essential
  • Experience of working with older people with mental health conditions Experience of dementia
  • Experience of MDT working at band 5 or 6 level or equivalent.

Desirable
  • Recent experience of working with older adults with physical conditions
  • Recent experience of working with adults with mental health conditions.
  • Experience of working in a community or primary care team
  • Experience of service improvement

Skills
Essential
  • Good written, verbal & IT skills with patients, carers and other professionals.
  • Ability to undertake specialist OT assessments and assess complex risks with people with mental health conditions and cognitive impairment.
  • Ability to apply the OT process and plan, carry out and evaluate treatment for this client group according to needs and best practice evidence.
  • Understanding of the diverse needs of older adults
  • Effective time management and organisational skills and ability to work under pressure
  • Understanding of OT Professional Code of Conduct and OT core skills, and their application in practice

Desirable
  • Clinical supervision skills
  • Ability to undertake initial mental health assessments and experience of care coordination and CPA.
