You will be a qualified Registered Nurse (Adult) with a real passion for delivering high quality clinical care. You will be self-motivated, flexible and work well within a team but be able to work autonomously. You do not need to have prison experience as we will provide you with a full induction and training.

Work within the Primary Care Team is varied and includes triaging, emergency care and treatment, health promotion, end of life/palliative care, effective care planning and liaising with the multidisciplinary team. It's this variety that keeps things interesting and stimulating. Every day will bring new challenges and new experiences but you'll have all the support you need to deliver the best care possible from both the healthcare team and the prison team.

HMP Woodhill is a Category A/B prison accommodating approximately 600 adult male prisoners.

Main duties of the job

  • To be part of a multi-disciplinary team delivering holistic health care to the prison population based on a primary care model.
  • To assess, plan, implement and evaluate high quality evidence based care within the boundaries of role.
  • To monitor long term conditions, deliver health promotion and screening and respond to medical emergencies.

Job description Job responsibilities

CLINICAL
  • Be proficient in undertaking the following procedures (training will be given):
    • Vital observations and diagnostics (BP, pulse, SATS, temperature, respiration rate, blood glucose monitoring, peak flow)
    • Wound care
    • Immunisations
    • ECG recording
    • Venepuncture
    • Near patient testing
  • Administer medication (including second signatory) and adhere to statutory (NMC) and organisational Requirements and Guidelines relating to the Administration of Medicines
  • Triage patients to determine clinical priorities and potential need to admit to the Inpatient Unit
  • Undertake health screening using agreed templates
  • Provide health promotion advice including sexual health and blood borne virus prevention and testing
  • Assist with the activities of daily living and the development, review and update of care plans

Participate in the named-nurse scheme to the residential units within HMP Wood hill and work to raise
  • the profile of healthcare services within that environment and ensure full integration between residential unit staff and healthcare services
  • Respond appropriately and in a timely way to healthcare & medical emergencies within the prison
  • Facilitate referrals to other agencies and clinical services
  • Undertake assessment of suitability of patients to be transferred or released
  • Respect patients individuality and maintain their privacy within the constraints of the custodial environment
  • Support patients who are distressed and could be at risk of harm to themselves or others or who are at risk of suicide
  • Initiate an ACCT where appropriate and attend review meetings
  • Co-ordinate healthcare activity on a day-to-day basis, acting as shift leader in the absence of a more senior member of staff
  • Assist with stock control and equipment checking (All clinical areas and emergency bags)
  • Recognise and respond to the health needs of vulnerable, disabled and older prisoners
  • Recognise signs and symptoms of drug and alcohol withdrawal and support individuals who have substance misuse problems
  • Undertake expanding roles following relevant training
  • Work within Infection Prevention and Control Guidance

PROFESSIONAL
  • Work as part of the multidisciplinary team participating in procedures and duties in accordance with agreed standards relevant to role
  • Maintain registration with the NMC and work within all its guidelines ensuring the adherence to the NMC Code of Conduct at all times
  • Adhere to all CNWL, Prison and Local policies and procedures and sign that have been read and understood
  • Prioritise work load and have a flexible and adaptive approach
  • Participate meaningfully in supervision and annual appraisal and maintain a personal development plan
  • Support junior staff in their development by mentoring and preceptorship, informal teaching and encouragement
  • Ensure the security and confidentiality of personal and sensitive information about CNWL, its staff, partners and patients, through adherence to its Information Policy
  • Have an understanding and participate in all aspects of clinical governance
  • Assist with clerical and administrative duties as required
  • Undertake such duties as may be reasonably required from time to time, as are consistent with the responsibility and scale of the post

  • Be aware of statutory national requirements relevant to the job function e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act

LEADERSHIP
  • Provide professional leadership and support to junior members of the healthcare team
  • Supervise others and act as an expert resource in the delivery of planned care
  • Maintain a professional manner and act as a role model
  • Take charge of the Unit in the absence of Senior Management
  • Manage time and resources effectively with an ability to prioritise workload and working flexibly to meet the needs of the service
  • Make appropriate reports to senior colleagues regarding any situation of concern.

COMMUNICATION
  • Maintain clear and comprehensive, signed and contemporaneous records both written and electronic in accordance with NMC Guidance for record keeping and CNWL Policy
  • Promote and maintain good practice in record keeping to the wider healthcare team
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills with patients, colleagues, prison staff and external agencies
  • Attend and contribute to team meetings to ensure that all members of the team are updated
  • Provide feedback to members of senior staff
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in line with local protocols
  • Use and understand all available IT within healthcare (e.g. SystmOne, email)


RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
  • Support and participate in research as appropriate, ensuring that the research governance principals are met
  • Assist when needed with clinical audit


EDUCATION & TRAINING
  • Undertake all relevant and mandatory training as per CNWL and Prison Policy in order to maintain and develop own skills and knowledge
  • Meet PREP requirements and the maintenance of a professional portfolio that shows evidence of continuous professional development and reflective practice
  • Provide teaching, mentorship and support to other staff and students
  • Foster and encourage a learning environment conducive to student education and continuing professional development of the team
