The post holder is responsible for providing Psychological Therapy, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), to people experiencing an eating disorder. The post holder is based with the expanding Eating Disorders Service for Adults (EDSA), which sits within the wider Community Mental Health Service.

EDSA have expanded to enable delivery of the FREED (First episode Rapid Early intervention for Eating Disorders) care package (see https://freedfromed.co.uk/), alongside their existing service. The post holder will be working with clients accessing treatment through this pathway, as well as contributing to broader therapy provision within the service.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide specialist individual or group Psychological Therapy, including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), to adults experiencing an eating disorder.
  • To tailor interventions to the developmental needs of young adults, using the FREED care package resources as appropriate.
  • To provide specialist assessments for adults who may be experiencing an eating disorder.
  • To provide specialist advice and support on the psychological therapy aspects of care to other professionals as required.
  • To Provide individual or group Psychological Therapy to adults within the wider Community Mental Health Service when needed.

Over the past 18 months the Community Eating Disorders Service for Adults has undergone a rapid expansion in line with this broader transformation, and the post-holder will be joining an enthusiastic multidisciplinary team that includes a Psychiatrist, nurses, psychologists, dietitians, psychological therapists, Trainee Clinical Associate Psychologists, Clinical practitioners, assistant psychologist and support workers.

Job description Job responsibilities

You will be a qualified and accredited CBT therapist or a qualified Clinical or Counselling Psychologist with a passion for supporting adults experiencing eating disorders, through comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment and interventions. Previous experience of working with eating disorder diagnoses is desirable but not essential as excellent supervision and training opportunities exist within the team and the wider trust.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Full accreditation as a CBT Therapist with the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) or successfully completed a level 2 accredited training and pending accreditation or
  • Clinical or Counselling psychologist who has undertaken a level 1 BABCP accredited course in CBT and is committed to additional training and supervised CBT practice to gain accreditation as CBT therapist. AND Training in CBT for Eating Disorders (e.g. CBT-E) or a commitment to engage in such training.
Knowledge Essential
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge and theory in relation to CBT interventions.
  • Evidence of continued professional development as required by BABCP guidelines.
  • Knowledge of other modalities (e.g. Systemic; CAT, Art Therapy) sufficient to engage appropriately with colleagues and their work with clients.
Experience Essential
  • Experience of working with people with severe and complex mental health problems using CBT as a significant part of your role
  • Experience of working with young people aged 16-25
