CNWL is looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Consultant for the Harness Community Team, both innovative and most essentially, able to work collaboratively with the team.

This full time position will be excellent for anyone wanting to broaden their experience of community psychiatry and develop their clinical skills in a supportive and challenging environment. The team is well established with good support from senior clinical and managerial colleagues.

Harness Locality Community Mental Health Service is located at Park Royal Centre for Mental Health, Central Way, London NW10 7NS.

The Harness Community Mental Health team is a multi-disciplinary team that provides health and social care under CPA for service users living in independent or semi-supported accommodation in Brent who have severe and enduring mental illness as well as high degrees of co-morbidity and need. The team accepts referrals from the GPs, in-patient service, early intervention service, forensic services and CAMHS.

Main duties of the job

This is a full-time replacement post working within the Harness Locality Community Mental Health Team. The post holder will have consultant and RC responsibility for a defined caseload of service users under the care of the Harness Locality Community Mental Health Team. The post holder will also provide mentoring and supervision as an experienced consultant

Job description Job responsibilities

Principal Clinical duties of post holder
  • Assessment of new patients and clinical supervision of assessments carried out by other team members.
  • Full participation in the multidisciplinary team providing care in the community.
  • Senior medical responsibility for the care carried out by the Community Mental Health Team for both CPA and LPC patients.
  • Review and monitoring of the caseload to ensure appropriate care packages are put in place and discharges facilitated to maintain patient flow.
  • Contribution to the continuous development of the Community Mental Health Team, and to other parts of the Service as required.
  • Domiciliary visits to provide assessment and treatment services as a member of the CMHT
  • Domiciliary assessments in response to emergencies
  • Research, in terms of personal projects and clinical audits as part of clinical governance.
  • Involvement in joint planning of future service development.
  • Occasional psychiatric assessments of residents who may be in crisis in another borough.
  • Close liaison with the wards to facilitate admission and discharge planning.
  • Liaison with HTT, Psychiatric Liaison Services, AMHP services and Forensic Services in the borough.

  • Teaching and training

    To include:
  • There is one GP trainee and one part time specialty doctor in the Harness team.
  • An active role in the postgraduate teaching programme, which consists of a local academic meeting on Wednesday lunchtime. This meeting includes a Journal Club and case presentations. This takes place at the inpatient site Park Royal Centre for Mental Health.
  • Teaching/training of medical students who regularly attend CMHT as part of their psychiatry experience, from Imperial school of medicine. Support is also given to work experience students where applicable.
  • Appropriately trained consultants would be encouraged to take up the role of Educational Supervisors for core and higher trainees from the St Marys training scheme in Psychiatry. Candidates willing to take up this role will be supported to access relevant training and this will be included in Job Planning.
  • Training and teaching of wider MDT staff with the community teams and other teams in the borough.

  • General duties
  • To manage, appraise and provide professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed between consultant colleagues and the medical director and in accordance with the Trusts personnel, policies and procedures.
  • To ensure that junior medical staff working with the post holder, operate within the parameters of the New Deal and are Working Time Directive compliant.
  • To undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients.
  • To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively, and submit this promptly through the trusts clinical information systems.
  • To participate in service and business planning activity for the locality and, as appropriate, for the whole mental health service.
  • To participate in annual appraisal for consultants.
  • To attend and participate in the academic program of the Trust, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD program.
  • To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval, and to abide by professional codes of conduct.
  • To participate annually, as a minimum, in a job plan review with the clinical manager, which will include consultation with a relevant manager in order to ensure that the post is developed to take into account changes in service configuration and delivery associated with modernization.
  • To work with local managers and professional colleagues in ensuring the efficient running of services, and share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.
  • To comply with the Trusts agreed policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions, and to take an active role in the financial management of the service and support the medical director and other managers in preparing plans for services

  • Person Specification Qualifications Essential
    • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
    • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
    • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
    • Additional clinical qualifications
    ELIGIBILITY Essential
    • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
    • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months
    • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
    • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment
    • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
    TRANSPORT Essential
    • Holds and will use valid UK driving licence OR provides evidence of proposed alternative.
    • Excellent knowledge in specialty
    • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
    • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service
