If so, Southampton Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service has a great opportunity for an experienced and dynamic qualified Family and Systemic Psychotherapist who has passion for community CAMHS and innovative ways of working. This is a great opportunity to join our team in Solent NHS Trust Children & Families Service line to support in the delivery of high-quality children's mental health services.

This role will allow opportunity to contribute specialist systemic knowledge to the multi-disciplinary team to facilitate wider understanding of systemic issues and participate in a team approach to care planning and risk management.

Main duties of the job

As one of the senior members of the team, you will work alongside senior staff and contribute to the team's development, as we continue to strive to be an accessible, responsive and innovative service with patient care and patient experience at its heart. There will be opportunities to develop your leadership and strategic skills with support from senior colleagues. For example, you may contribute to service development, Quality Improvement and clinical governance initiatives, service user involvement, audit and research. We welcome applications from candidates who can bring knowledge and skills to help us build on our success; to create a high quality, efficient and effective system to address demand and capacity issues and expertise in areas such as intake, assessment and brief treatment models and groups.

We are looking for committed, experienced and knowledgeable therapists with a passion for working with children, young people and their families. The successful candidate will provide systemic assessment, treatment- planning and interventions for young people and their families, working independently and autonomously with an agreed case-load as well as working with other family therapists, systemic practitioners and wider team members and/or external agencies in order to facilitate the best possible outcomes.

Job description Job responsibilities

Clinical and Professional

*Children and families to receive high quality systemic assessments and interventions based on specialist knowledge and relevant theoretical models. This will involve face to face contact with children and families and professional networks to discuss and work through highly complex, sensitive and personal information. This would also include the completion of personal and relational development, genograms, eco-maps, analysis and assessment of multiple levels of contextual meaning, deconstruction of current interactional patterns of behaviour and meaning around mental health issues and complex relationships, creating methods for client-centred analysis of change, using1st and 2nd order interactions, and other systemic assessment tools.

*To formulate and implement plans for therapeutic treatment that is informed by methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of care settings.

*Drawing upon complex assessment material to provide verbal and written systemic formulations that aid evidence based clinical interventions for children, families and other professionals presenting with highly complex problems.

*Providing specialised systemic interventions drawing from a broad range of systemic models as part of an agreed package of care, to children and families with complex problems, across the developmental spectrum, within different relational forms, and managed within the context of multidisciplinary working.

*To work with complex and multifaceted clinical problems within an emotionally charged or difficult context.

*To liaise and work with other professionals and agencies (including Education, Social Care, Health, and voluntary agencies) involved with a child and/or family, and communicate difficult, sensitive and complex information that is relevant and appropriate to the child and family's needs.

*To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and their families, and to provide advice to other professions on the systemic aspects of risk assessment and risk management in line with CAMHS procedures.

*To identify and take appropriate action to safeguard and protect vulnerable children, adolescents and adults where, in the course of clinical practice, abuse or neglect is suspected or recognised.

*Maintaining a caseload of children, adolescents and families presenting with a spectrum of emotional and related presentations/disorders. This is likely to include children presenting with a range of complex mental health problems including depression, ASD, ADHD, sexual abuse, eating disorders, conduct disorder, disability, and child protection issues.

*To communicate in skilled and sensitive manner information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans to families and professional networks.

*To provide advice, consultancy and, where appropriate, supervision to other practitioners who provide direct intervention with individuals, families or groups. Where appropriate to work jointly with other team members in the provision of individual and group-based programmes.

*Ability to communicate effectively with children, young people and families in distress, contain high levels of anxiety and manage own and others resulting stress, the ability to maintain therapeutic boundaries and create containing safe working environments. Working within both formal and informal community settings

*To maintain current knowledge of the operation of video equipment and promote ethical and effective use in line with Trust policy. To introduce this practice to families in a sensitive way, to advise and instruct clinicians in other disciplines on the appropriate use of this as a therapeutic tool. To use videotape to enhance the skills of colleagues in the family therapy clinics.

*To establish an evidence-based approach and show collaboration with outcome measurement and generally comply with clinical and social care governance requirements.

*To maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation and regulations and local procedures related to the care and protection and specialist treatment of children and young people with complex mental health difficulties or disorders.

*To undertake periodic review, research and evaluation of the therapeutic process and to undertake and regularly contribute to research and audit programmes within the Trust.

*To follow professional and Trust policies on continuous professional development.

*To receive regular clinical/professional supervision and, where appropriate, other senior professional colleagues.

*To deliver and support in service training workshops and seminars on systemic topics as requested.

*To continue to professionally develop by attending conferences and workshops commensurate with maintaining professional registration.

*To engage in regular training on child protection and safeguarding procedures to ensure that familiarisation with multi-agency child protection/safeguarding procedures are thorough and regularly updated.

*To be aware of research relevant to the needs of young people with mental health/behavioural difficulties to promote evidence based systemic practice.

*Work as a reflective practitioner using the reflective tool to develop self and others clinical and professional practice.

*To be aware of policies and procedures and personal responsibilities associated with them, i.e., record keeping, health and safety and complaints procedures.

*Works positively with colleagues to maintain clinically effective relationships.

Communication

*To communicate effectively through written notes and reports and verbal communication with all relevant personnel involved in the YP's care.

*To possess IT skills in order to effectively communicate in writing with colleagues, other professionals and families in accordance with trust policies e.g., writing of comprehensive report

*To liaise and joint work with colleagues, other professionals and agencies as required in relation to both clinical work and the wider agenda of working in partnership within a multi-agency framework.

*To participate in team clinical meetings in order to share expertise, promote good practice and the safety of clients.

*To participate in referral meetings as required. Making clinical decisions as part of this group regarding the appropriateness of new referrals in line with referral criteria. Assessing the level of clinical need for referrals accepted and communicating outcomes to referrers.

Administrative

*Responsible for ensuring appropriate records and clinical notes are maintained and letters copied to clients in accordance with Trust/LA and National Policy.

*Informed consent is obtained where appropriate and documented in Accordance with Trust procedures.

*Appropriate risk, lone working and other assessments are completed and documented in a timely manner in accordance with Trust Policy/LA.

*To receive appropriate health, safety and other essential training as prescribed and relevant records are maintained.

*Working with colleagues and staff to ensure the principals of improving working lives are adhered to.

Knowledge, Education and Training

*To be part of providing multi agency education initiatives to widen the understanding of the therapeutic needs of children. to increase the skills of colleagues working with children and young people in other settings

*To provide alongside other colleagues, educational talks to professionals from all disciplines and agencies, to foster discussion mutual understanding and involvement in identifying areas of unmet need.

*To take part in CAMHS training/presentations during development weeks. To feedback via CPD from any courses attended or training undertaken. Compliance with trust arrangements for continuing professional development.

*To ensure the development and co-ordination of relevant student training placements within the team, provide support, supervision and mentorship as appropriate.

*To continue professional development and training by attendance and contribution at relevant clinic/Trust/regional meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences.

*To partake in mandatory training as required in Solent NHS Trust.

*To provide a training role for new and current staff.

*To take part in teaching programmes as required for nursing staff, medical students or other statutory or voluntary bodies.

Management and Leadership

*The post holder will have responsibilities as one of the team's senior clinicians, including supervision of trainees and qualified Family and Systemic Psychotherapists. Alongside other senior clinicians and the Clinical Service Manager, the post holder will support the team to continue to strive to deliver accessible, responsive and innovative CAMHS services.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Post-graduate qualification in relevant mental health/social welfare profession and demonstrable practice.
  • Masters level qualification in Systemic Psychotherapy or Advanced Diploma in Systemic Psychotherapy combined with significant and relevant post qualifying experience.
  • UKCP Registration
  • Post qualification training in one or more additional specialised areas of therapeutic practice
Experience Essential
  • Extensive practice experience in relevant first profession
