The Community Neurological Outpatient Service is looking for an enthusiastic band 6 Occupational Therapist to join our friendly and dynamic team.
Interview date 28th March 2023.

This role is to support the delivery of community neurological rehabilitation to Patients within clinics and wider community settings.

This role will give you the opportunity to work within a large multidisciplinary team, working closely alongside Occupational therapists, Psychologists, Nurses and rehabilitation assistants, receiving strong clinical leadership from senior colleagues.

We have regular in-service training to support ongoing CPD.

The service is embedded as part of the wider Hertfordshire Neurological Service.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate be an integral member of the Hertfordshire Community neurological team which specialises in the treatment and management of patients with complex neurological conditions.

You will provide specialised assessment and treatment for patients which will have a variety of physical, cognitive and psychological challenges.

Ongoing staff development is hugely important to us and you will have an opportunity to receive training through in-service training and have regular supervision to support you in developing your own learning needs.

The ideal candidate will be flexible and adaptable to support service delivery and will be expected to work in an agile manner, using virtual consultations on occasions.

You must hold a full, valid UK driving licence and have access to a car to use regularly for business purposes (unless you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010).

Job description
Job responsibilities

  • To provide Occupational Therapy assessment to neurological patients with diverse physical and cognitive presentations, and deliver an individualised treatment programme, in clinic, patients homes and community settings.
  • To be responsible for delivering group education and or rehabilitation programmes and specialist clinics e.g. splinting, Parkinsons and MS as required.
  • To provide expert advice, guidance and information to health and social care professionals, carers and relatives and other non-professionals.
  • To hold responsibility for own case load, working without direct supervision. Supervision takes the form of regular formal training and clinical reasoning sessions, peer review, case conferences and reflective practice. Access to advice and support from a senior occupational therapist is available regularly.
  • To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.
  • To provide expert advice, guidance and information to health and social care professionals, carers and relatives and other non-professionals.
  • To be registered with the Health Professional Council/ Occupational Therapy register.
  • To be responsible for the delegation to, and supervision and co-ordination of band 5 Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy students and rehabilitation assistants on a daily basis.
  • To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own clinical practice and work. To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patients under your management.
  • To be responsible for the safe and competent use of therapy equipment by patients , rehabilitation assistants and student Occupational Therapists, through teaching, monitoring, training and supervision of practice.
  • To deputise for more senior staff in their absence, taking responsibility for operational management of the Occupational Therapy team and allocating and organising the work of assistant staff to meet service priorities on a daily basis.


Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
Essential
  • Occupational Therapy degree or equivalent
  • HPC registration
  • Experience of working with neurological patients in a community or inpatient setting at Band 5 level.
  • Documented evidence of professional development and reflective practice in relevant aspects of neurological rehabilitation: e.g. attendance at inservice training sessions, reflective practice etc

Desirable
  • Attendance at relevant post-graduate neurological training courses e.g. Normal movement, spasticity management, splinting, cognition and perceptual assessment, fatigue management
  • Experience of working in a neurological rehabilitation setting at band 6 level.

Experience and Knowledge
Essential
  • Ability and experience of carrying out a comprehensive neurological occupational therapy assessment in order to formulate a comprehensive neurological treatment plan and goals
  • Knowledge and experience of using a wide range of therapeutic occupational therapy interventions for the treatment of patients with neurological conditions.
  • Knowledge and experience of using a range of recognised outcome measures and goal setting skills as appropriate to the rehabilitation of patients with neurological conditions
  • Good understanding of current NHS issues, professional standards, CPD, clinical governance
  • Able to work as an autonomous practitioner.

Desirable
  • Experience of supervising and appraising other staff e.g. rehabilitation assistants
  • Experience of supervising student occupational therapists.
  • Experience in delivering training to occupational therapists and other members of the MDT
  • Understanding of clinical governance and the implications for the service

Skills and Abilities
Essential
  • Physical skills, dexterity, coordination and sensory skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients. A good ability with specific handling and sensory techniques specific to the treatment of patients with neurological dysfunction.
  • An ability to demonstrate clinical problem solving in complex cases.
  • Ability to prioritise patient workload
  • Ability to carry out patient manual handling tasks.
  • Ability to carry equipment such as wheelchair and commodes in and out of stores/ car and patient's homes.
