A new opportunity has arisen for a full-time band 7 Speech and Language Therapist in the Working Age Adults Mental Health inpatient unit and Home Treatment Team at Farnham Road Hospital in Guildford. This post is for 37.5 hours per week.

The successful candidate will be joining a supportive team of Speech and Language Therapists already working elsewhere in the learning disability, neurodevelopmental, children and young persons, older age adults, and forensic services. The post holder will benefit from:

The post will also be supported by the Professional lead for Speech and Language Therapy and the AHP lead.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapist to develop and lead the dysphagia and communication pathways alongside a multi-disciplinary health team consisting of support workers, nursing, psychiatry, occupational therapy, psychology, physiotherapy and dietetics.

The post holder will have a high degree of autonomy, providing high quality clinical care to people that use our services, as well as having a key role in supporting the development of skills across the inpatient wards and home treatment team, in relation to screening for and meeting the eating, drinking, swallowing and communication needs of people using our services. You will also be contributing to service and policy development. The post holder will be passionate about the rights and welfare of people with mental health needs and see person-centred care as a cornerstone of their practice.

The candidate must have a full and valid driving license and access to a vehicle for work purposes.

Job Overview This role will be responsible for leading the Speech and Language therapy provision within the working age acute mental health services (inpatient and Home Treatment Team), by ensuring both communication and dysphagia pathways are developed and followed by all staff, training and clinical supervision is provided and standards of service provision are set, monitored and maintained. This role will promote good communication standards so that people who use the service, and their families and carers, are involved in decisions about their own care and the service in a way they wish to be.

Qualifications required

Speech and Language Therapy professional qualification and further training and experience to masters level or equivalent.

A qualification in the assessment and management of dysphagia

Additional leadership/management study (Desirable)

Experience required

Relevant post qualification clinical experience working with with people who have mental health needs

Experience of leading clinical practice, service development or project work.

Highly specialist knowledge of relevant assessment and treatment models for people with mental health needs

Experience of providing clinical supervision to others

Experience of supporting students on placement

Experience of representing Speech and Language Therapy within a service and Trust

UK driving license and access to a car for work purposes

Key Responsibilities

To act as lead clinician across acute services (inpatient and Home Treatment Team) for working age adults.

To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of clinical work and care and to maintain high standards of care in all areas of practice in accordance with the HCPC Code of Conduct, professional guidelines and Trust Policies and Procedures. To act within the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act (2005).

To be aware of and implement Safeguarding Adult and Child Protection Policies, Procedures and legislation. To carry out professional responsibilities under the Mental Health Act 1983 and other relevant legislation.

To develop a safe and effective dysphagia service that provides dysphagia assessment, advice, and intervention in order to stabilise and/or reduce associated clinical risks on oral intake, make recommendations regarding environment, positioning, dysphagia techniques and/or texture modification of diet and fluids.

To develop and promote a communication pathway that provides assessment, advice and intervention in order to promote choice making, joint decision making, shared risk management, joint care planning. To provide recommendations for all staff working with individuals with speech, language and communication needs.

To support the service to make reasonable adjustments for individuals with speech, language and communication needs who require treatment for a mental health condition.

To develop systems to respond to communication and dysphagia referrals in a timely and safe manner.

To provide specialist advice to Speech & Language Therapy staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team and wider Trust through case discussion, formal consultation, clinical supervision and education.

To support the organisation through the provision of resources, training, and education in the area of communication, dysphagia and mental health.

To be responsible for the professional leadership and continued development of a team / service area in the area of dysphagia and communication.

To work with the other professional leads to lead the development of services and practice in the mental health division.

To ensure that the healthcare needs of people with Mental Health diagnoses are communicated to service commissioners and other healthcare providers.

To positively contribute to divisional developments and business planning in relation to Speech and Language therapy practice. To advocate and represent the service.

To be responsible for the development and implementation of appropriate policies, protocols and care pathways.

To evaluate available research and develop and implement evidence-based practices across own service area on an on-going basis.

To take the lead for clinical governance and clinical audit in own service area; sets, monitors and reports on quality standards for clinical work, develops action plans to address areas of concern and ensures robust implementation.

Contribute to appropriate staff recruitment and contribute to the wider strategic plans regarding Speech and Language therapy recruitment.

To act as practice assessor/supervisor/teacher in teaching, facilitating and supporting pre-registration students and junior personnel and to participate in the audit of educational placements and to participate in new staff induction.

To research national best practice and enable services to benchmark practice against nationally recognised standards - in partnership with people with mental health diagnoses

To undertake violence reduction training to develop skills to be able to respond to local alarms and emergency situations when raised, assisting with restraints to keep people on the wards safe.

Use Violence Reduction techniques and de-escalation skills in managing own safety on the unit

To deal with repeated and varied interruptions from staff and patients as well as the unpredictable nature of working in an acute mental health setting.

Show empathy and reassurance to patients, carers and relatives when imparting sensitive information

Able to deal with exposure to clients with complex learning and emotional needs such as distressed, anxious, psychotic and aggressive patients and dealing with behavioural difficulties and those problems associated with substance misuse

The job will be based across our acute services (inpatient and Home Treatment Team). The postholder will be expected to work flexibly within all the services as the need arises and will be expected to collaborate with Speech and Language therapists in other directorates such as Learning Disabilities, Neurodevelopmental Service, and Older Age Adults.
