Newham's Health Team for Adults with Learning Disabilities is a looking for an experienced SLT with good leadership skills to join our supportive multidisciplinary team. We are a friendly team, working across the compact borough of Newham which is easily accessible by public transport or car. Our office is based in Stratford, East London, which has excellent transport links (Tube, tran, DLR).

Main duties of the job

  • To assess, develop and implement highly specialist Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) treatment, evaluate outcomes and make highly specialist clinical decisions following assessment of complex cases and write reports reflecting specialist knowledge.
  • To provide highly specialist advice to clients, carers, team members and others regarding management and care of patients/clients with dysphagia and communication.
  • To demonstrate good negotiating skills in case management of complex cases and in the management of conflict across a range of situations
  • To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence based practice and outcome measures.
  • To contribute to clinical teams both multidisciplinary and uni-disciplinary by discussing own and others input around client needs ensuring a well co-ordinated care plan including attendance at case conferences, reviews and other meetings which are central to client care.
  • To assess, develop and implement highly specialist Speech and Language therapy intervention and evaluate outcomes for individual clients with communication needs.
  • To write reports reflecting highly specialist knowledge of communication for people with learning disabilities including those with autism and/or behaviours that challenge
  • To demonstrate advanced clinical skills in the management of an in-depth knowledge of dysphagia and communicative skills of people with learning disabilities.

Job description Job responsibilities

We are keen to find a lead SLT who will be able to bring enthusiasm and expertise to our team. We have a range of MDT pathways including our complex physical health pathway, focusing on clients with PMLD, as well as dementia, and Challenging Behaviour. Our lead SLT will be involved in the strategic development of the pathways, bringing knowledge of communication and dysphagia to an MDT approach.

The post holder will also be leading on new initiatives including around training and development, as well holding a clinical caseload. There are opportunities to work with families, carers and day services around communication and dysphagia, and we are keen to develop the service to maximise our input particularly with a focus on embedding changes eg. new communication systems.

The role involves supervision of staff and the post holder is fully involved the multidisciplinary leadership team. The post holder will be responsible for caseload management so will need to evidence good management skills and decision making.

The post holder will receive clinical and managerial supervision from an LD SLT and we also have good links with neighbouring boroughs as part of East London NHS foundation Trust, and can offer great networking and development opportunities, eg access to learning networks.

Person Specification Education and Training Essential
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification or equivalent.
  • Registered SLT with Health Care Professional Council
  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses up to Master's degree and/or equivalent, especially Dysphagia to Intermediate level/Language and Communication difficulties in people with severe learning disabilities
  • Membership of specialist interest group and evidence of CPD to specialist level.
Desirable
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech & Language Therapist.
Experience Essential
  • Minimum 4 years relevant specialist SLT experience post registration
  • In depth experience within specialist areas
  • Experience of training carers and staff teams
Knowledge and Skills Essential
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills including observation, listening and empathy skills.
  • Demonstrates well established knowledge of a range appropriate current specialist therapeutic interventions for communication difficulties in adults with learning disabilities
  • Demonstrate in depth knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to adults with Learning Disabilities
  • Demonstrate understanding of the principles of clinical; governance/audit
