We are seeking aSpecialty Doctor in General Adult Community, working in the South West quadrant.

Main duties of the job

Adult Community Mental Health Teams in South West Hertfordshire operate from 2 clinical bases out of Colne House in Watford (covering Watford and Three Rivers) and the Civic Offices in Borehamwood (covering Hertsmere). Both provide a range of community based services, including outpatient clinics based on recovery care pathways.

The post holder will be attached to Watford Adult Community Mental Health Service (ACMHS). The medical team is formed by 2 full-time consultant psychiatrists, 2 part-time consultants and other 2 other specialty doctors.

You must ensure the relevant professional registration is maintained, including Section 12.

Job description Job responsibilities

Duties include but not exclusive to;
  • The post holder will be expected to work closely with colleagues in the multi-disciplinary team. He will be supervised by one of the consultants in Watford ACMHS. He/she is expected to liaise with related teams such as the Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team and acute inpatient services to provide optimal care for patients referred to the service.
  • The duties include direct assessment and treatment of adult patients (16-65 years old + graduates). This will take place in a variety of settings including clinics (new patient and follow-up) in Colne House and in the community.
  • To undertake initial assessments & joint assessments with other members of the team in line with our local principles of New Ways of Working.
  • The post holder will be expected to contribute to teaching and training within the team, and to be available for consultation and advice to less experienced colleagues within primary and secondary care and in other agencies.


  • Person Specification Qualifications Essential
    • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
    • Fully registered medical practitioner with the General Medical Council (GMC). Possession of a current License to Practice.
    Desirable
    • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
    • A diploma in Psychiatry or MRCPsych or equivalent
    • Interest in working towards section 12 approval and AC status.
    Experience, Clinical Skills & Knowledge Essential
    • A minimum of 3 years' experience in General Adult Psychiatry with at least two years in an approved training scheme.
    • Experience of working in community settings in General Adult Psychiatry.
    • Ability to work well in Multidisciplinary teams
    • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
    • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
    • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA.
    Desirable
    • Clinical experience in a range of services within General Adult Psychiatry.
    Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning Essential
    • Participated in continuous professional development
    • Able to use and appraise clinical evidence.
    • Has actively participated in clinical audit
    Desirable
    • Participated in research or service evaluation.
    Transport Essential
    • Holds and will use valid UK driving licence OR provides evidence of proposed alternative.
