We are seeking a Specialty Doctor to work within our Inpatient Mental Health Unit within Adult Psychiatry.

Main duties of the job

The Aston ward is a 20 bedded acute inpatient treatment ward for adults of working age (male and female) based in Stevenage. The Specialty Doctor will work 10 PAs with one full-time Consultant Psychiatrist, one Core Trainee and one FY1 Doctor, who are based at Aston ward.

The post holder will work in an established multidisciplinary team, providing senior clinical input into the integrated acute care pathway. Since May 2015 there has been an Acute Assessment Unit operational on Swift ward, Kingfisher Court which accepts all the admissions. The Aston Ward accepts female patients that need psychiatric treatment from the AAU and also accepts direct admissions.

Job description Job responsibilities

Duties include but not exclusive to:
  • Ward Rounds - Assessment, diagnosis, formulation and review of management plans for service users. Flexibly review and re-assess service users to assess their response to treatment and their readiness to access other parts of Acute Care Pathway.
  • Mental Health Act Work - Meeting the requirements of emergency work, MHA assessments, and assessments of capacity, Community Treatment Orders. Presenting evidence at MHA Tribunals and Hospital Managers Hearings Maintain AC Status and attend relevant training.
  • Follow Trust Policy - Know Policy relevant to the role, follow it and support other members of the multidisciplinary team to do so also.

Person Specification Personal Qualifications Essential
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Fully registered medical practitioner with the General Medical Council (GMC). Possession of a current License to Practice.
Desirable
  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
  • A diploma in Psychiatry or MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Section 12 Approval OR Interest in working towards section 12 approval and AC status.
Experience, Clinical Skills & Knowledge Essential
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in General Adult Psychiatry with at least two years in an approved training scheme.
  • Experience of working in community settings in General Adult Psychiatry.
  • Ability to work well in Multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA.
  • Clinical experience in a range of services within General Adult Psychiatry.
Desirable
  • Clinical experience in a range of services within General Adult Psychiatry.
Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning Essential
  • Participated in continuous professional development
  • Able to use and appraise clinical evidence.
  • Has actively participated in clinical audit.
Desirable
  • Participated in research or service evaluation.
