We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic Consultant Psychiatrist to join our newly refurbished, female Inpatient ward in Basingstoke, Mid & North Hampshire Division. The post holder will be based at Parklands Hospital, Basingstoke and will become part of a team of consultants working in the Acute Care Team.

This inpatient role stands out from other acute psychiatric inpatient roles currently advertised because of the favourable ration of medical time per patient. The postholder will have a maximum of 12 inpatients at any point in time. They will have the support of a middle grade doctor Specialty Doctor or higher trainee as well as a junior doctor. They will work alongside another consultant with their own junior doctors who will spend 5 sessions on the ward looking after the remainder of the 6 beds. We have deliberately resourced the ward in this way to ensure quality of care to our patients, to prevent burnout amongst clinicians, to allow medical teaching and supervision to junior doctors, to maintain turnover, to share tribunal report writing, ensure excellent physical health monitoring, allow medics to contribute to service development and quality improvement and allow an offsite PA per week to be taken by the post-holder.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be based at Parklands Hospital, Basingstoke and will be responsible for providing clinical care, RC responsibility and treatment for up to 12 female patients in a brand new single sex 18 bedded acute ward as well as providing clinical leadership to the team.

Cherry ward forms part of the Acute Care Pathway, together with an 18 bedded Male ward Juniper ward, a 6 bedded MoD Unit, a 10 bedded PICU Hazel ward and a Crisis and Home Treatment Team, all based at Parklands Hospital. The postholder will join 6 other consultant colleagues in AMH, 4 middle grade doctors and approximately 6 junior doctors in the medical team supporting the Acute Care Pathway. The Leadership team across the pathway consists of 2 Ward Managers at Band 7, 2 Band 8A Modern Matrons across the wards, 2 band 7 leaders in the CRHT and a Crisis pathway Manager Band 8A across CRHT.

The successful candidate will be part of a combined North West Hampshire Senior on call Rota, approximately 1 in 9 frequency with option of first or second senior on call, at 3 per cent and 1 per cent banding respectively.
