Main duties of the job

You will initially join as a Band 5 Occupational Therapist.

Job Purpose
  • Acute & Urgent Inpatient Services provide recovery-focused support to adults aged 18 and above.
  • The post holder will contribute to the provision of a high quality Occupational Therapy service to service users.
  • This vacancy is suitable for both newly qualified applicants as well as established members of staff, as the work and CPD can be tailored accordingly. Devon Partnership NHS Trust offers a preceptorship programme to newly registered professionals, who will attend a facilitated preceptorship programme, continue with the development of a professional portfolio and receive structured support within the workplace in order to develop their competence as an autonomous profession

Duties and Responsibilities

Communication and Working Relationship Skills.

  • Develop and maintain effective communication and professional relationships with service users, MDT members, carers, and Occupational Therapy colleagues and other agencies and services.
  • To contribute to the maintenance and development of the Trust OT service.
  • Communicate complex and/or sensitive information consistent with service users level of understanding, culture and background.
  • Work as a member of the multidisciplinary team, contributing to decisions with regard to service users rehabilitation programmes.
  • To adhere to confidentiality policy set by trust and RCOT code of ethics.
  • To maintain professional boundaries at all times with patients.
  • To attend clinical meetings to discuss progress and recovery plans for patients.
  • To promote an understanding of the role of OT in the unit

Analytical and Judgemental Skills
  • To allocate, undertake and supervise occupational therapy assessments, addressing occupational performance and skills deficits, enabling the service user in areas of self-care, productivity and leisure.
  • Monitor and evaluate treatment in order to measure progress and effectiveness of intervention.
  • To demonstrate effective clinical reasoning skills in your everyday practice. To demonstrate effective activity analysis when planning and conducting interventions with patients.
  • To demonstrate use of initiative in daily practice.
  • To provide specialised assessment of patients regarding functional performance.
  • To contribute to transition planning when patients are leaving hospital

Planning and Organisational Skills
  • Responsible for organising and planning own caseload and managing clinical/non-clinical time effectively to fit with service needs and demands.
  • Plan and implement the effective use of resources within designated area.
  • To effectively manage independent caseload on ward and delegate appropriately to OT support staff.
  • To participate in the planning and delivery of the group programme.
  • Comply with Occupational Therapy policies and procedures to ensure smooth running of the service and to communicate problems or discrepancies to the line manager.
  • Participate in Team meetings, contribute to service planning and show leadership qualities in the management of operational issues as appropriate.

Responsibility for Patient/Client Care, Treatment and Therapy
  • Plan and implement individual and/or group OT interventions in collaboration with the service users, using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals.
  • Ensure that accurate, up to date written and electronic records and activity data are maintained in accordance with professional and Trust standards.
  • Enable service users skills development through the implementation and use of qualified occupational therapy knowledge and skills which is grounded in up to date research and evidence.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of planned therapeutic activities and making any necessary relevant modifications.
  • Ensure up to date risk assessments and group protocols are in place for all OT activities.

Responsibility for Policy and Service Development Implementation
  • Contribute to professional clinical governance arrangements in order to ensure the quality of the service provided.
  • Contribute to evaluation and future planning of the service.

Responsibility for Finance, Equipment and Other Resources
  • Report any issues of health and safety to the line manager, following Trust guidelines and policies.
  • Order/monitor and maintain any stock requirements in liaison with the line manager.
  • To have an awareness of and work within the OT budget.
  • To keep receipts for items purchased to enable budget keeping by Senior Occupational Therapist.
  • To monitor maintenance of equipment used by OT department.
  • To ensure the safe use of equipment by patients, assessing safety before recommendation and use.
  • To promote cost consciousness within service by using resources economically and effectively

Responsibility for Human Resources, e.g. Supervision, Training, HR Advice and Management
  • Provide supervision for OT Support Team and act as fieldwork educator for students as requested by the Senior Occupational Therapist.
  • To comply with the Trust Supervision and Appraisal Policy.
  • To access HR support when required.
  • To provide supervision to OT support team and students.
  • To take responsibility to identify and organise training needs.

Responsibility for Information Resources and Administrative Duties
  • To record contemporaneous and accurate records of patient interventions, in accordance with professional standards and Trust policy.
  • To make accurate statistical records in order to demonstrate the provision of an efficient and effective quality service.
  • Assist with departmental/service audits as required

Responsibility for Research and Development
  • To be involved with audit and research as directed by the Senior Occupational Therapist, inform OT clinical practice and support governance.
  • To support OT staff to develop robust outcome measures.
  • To support the Senior OT with the development of OT clinical practice.

Freedom to Act
  • Accountable for own professional actions and behaviour.

Any Other Specific Tasks Required

To promote an understanding of the role of the Occupational Therapist within Adult Inpatient Services in order to facilitate effective multi-disciplinary work and an enabling, therapeutic environment for patients.

Availability of Support & Supervision
  • Clinical and professional supervision is delivered in accordance with College of OT and Trust guidelines.
  • Line management from Advanced Occupational Therapist.

Responsibility for Personal and Professional Development
  • Review and reflect on own practice and performance through effective use of clinical and management supervision and appraisal as per Departmental and Trust Policy.
  • Assist with the induction of new staff, students and staff training as appropriate.
  • Participate and facilitate the staff appraisal scheme and to be responsible for complying with agreed personal development programme.
  • Responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through CPD activities and to maintain an up to date portfolio which reflects personal development.
  • Demonstrate a commitment and evidence of Lifelong Learning (e.g., short courses and reflection on previous experience) and to participate in departmental/service projects/audits.
  • Attend in-service training, as appropriate.
  • Responsible for continually updating compulsory and essential training.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Degree/Diploma in Occupational Therapy.
  • Registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC)
