CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) in Solent NHS Trust have a unique role for the right person, joining at the start of our Academy, designing and delivering training and development programmes for both our national and international clinical staff .

As a Clinical Education Lead, you will be part of a fantastic multi disciplinary team in CAMHS. They are fantastic because they all passionately care about Children and Young people and you will feel this from the moment you start. Your role within this team is to develop programmes for our specialist CAMHS practitioners that will expand and enhance the knowledge of our current people alongside all new practitioners into service. You will also be core to the development of the CAMHS academy which is being developed to enhance the career pathways for those working in and joining specialist mental health for children and young people.

We welcome applications from qualified CAMHS professionals including, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Mental Health, Childrens, Learning Disability, General Adult Registered Nurses and retired practitioners looking to return.

This is a 12-month fixed term contract and secondments are welcome.

Main duties of the job
You will be familiar with the aim of the CAMHS portfolio which is to provide the right intervention, at the right time to support the development of positive mental health from the point of early intervention through our Mental Health in Schools Team through to Crisis Intervention via our Liaison teams. As Clinical Education Lead your role is crucial to this team, and an understanding of roles, training and more importantly an ability to share best practice whilst introducing innovative models of delivery, coaching and support is essential.

Job description Job responsibilities

Clinical and Professional

1.Carry out Assessments of Clinical Competence (ACCs) in accordance with guidelines

2.In the extended role they will represent Solent NHS Trust in relevant education forums on a Wessex deanery wide basis, committees, and meetings relevant to Undergraduate Medical Education and report to the Director of Medical Education, Solent NHS Trust.

In CAMHS Liaison role (1 day per week):

1.To share responsibility for and to provide a Specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service within the Inreach Paediatric Liaison Team.

2.To be responsible for delivering specialist child and adolescent psychiatry in a way that is integrated with the work of other disciplines within the team and the University Hospital Southampton System.

3.To be responsible in liaising closely and integrate specialist child and adolescent psychiatry with the work of other agencies.

4.To provide guidance and consultation to other professionals, contributing directly to individual programmes of care and/or assessment of need and risk.

5.To manage referrals and to assess the needs of the referred child or young person and to develop, implement and evaluate next steps in the child's journey.

6.To ensure children, young people and their carers/significant others are included in planning, implementation and evaluation of care.

7.To ensure care is delivered in a person-centred manner ensuring the gender, ethnic cultural and spiritual needs of service users inform practice.

Communication

1.Provide pastoral support to students, including signposting to university support: Identify and address issues relating to student health and wellbeing, referring to the Director of Medical Education for guidance or faculty of medicine's pastoral care pathways as appropriate. Identify any concerns about student conduct, professionalism and/or health, and refer to Clinical Supervisor and/or Lead Tutor where appropriate

2.In the extended role they will work collaboratively with medical education teams in neighbouring trusts and maintain links with such groups: as Solent NHS Trust/ Southern Health Foundation Trust have shared students in tutorials and seminars. Increasing and leading the level of this collaborative working is central to the role, essential for students, benefits Solent NHS, and neighbouring trusts. With Support from the DME

3.As part of the tutorial lead a weekly reflective group with the students to encourage and lead reflective conversation and discussion surrounding challenging situations, experiences or patients that they may have experienced.

Administrative

1.Maintain appropriate records and provide supporting data in conjunction with the Undergraduate Administrator. Collate feedback from students on placement, analyse, interpret, feedback and implement changes as required with regards to the feedback obtained.

2.Acting as an educational resource for staff in clinical placements by: Communicating the Learning Outcomes of the module, and how students are expected to meet these with clinical supervisors; Contributing resources to Blackboard; Ensuring staff are aware of eLearning resources available

3.Being knowledgeable of handbooks, timetables, and other documentation and actively co-ordinate the local timetable.

4.Support the placement of students based in clinical teams, including: Provide clinical experiences for students in line with the Learning Outcomes of the module; Provide oversight of medical students in the clinical environment; Offer formative feedback to students; Act as a Smartcard Champion to support students in accessing the EPR system; Contribute to regular evaluation of placement, review student feedback and contribute to Annual Quality Reviews.

5.In the extended role they will be responsible for overseeing and managing the students' placements, monitoring progress and assessments and supporting the signing off a student's placement at the end. This includes recognising difficulties and rapid solution finding during placements to support process, personal and academic difficulties

Knowledge, Education and Training

1.Completion of Teaching Tomorrow's Doctors course, or equivalent training in educational theory, and assessment training for ACCs

2.To take responsibility for identifying own training and development needs, take the lead for suggestions for improvements to the service and policy changes to the line manager.

3.Take the lead in facilitating the arrangement of Taster Sessions and other educational sessions to complement clinical experiences-- in conjunction with the Undergraduate Administrator.

4.In the extended role they will be responsible for leading the student induction: with an induction into Solent Trust and their clinical placement and access to all relevant safety advice and protocols and relevant trust policies. The role requires close collaborative working with IT team to ensure all students have appropriate access to records

5.In the extended role they will ensure a weekly tutorial is provided for Solent NHS Trust medical students whilst on placement and provide leadership to the tutorial as well as teaching. In the extended role they are expected to facilitate the delivery of a rounded education in psychiatry, at times lead aspects of education relevant to their specialist field and maintain a multidisciplinary delivery of education beyond direct medical education

6.They will keep up to date with their continued professional development and attend teaching, education and clinical updates as required and reviewed annually in their appraisal. With support from the DME.

7.Annually they will review the teaching provided with multiple stakeholders and develop the clinical learning programme for the students to meet the changing needs of the curriculum and service demands.

Management and Leadership

1.Provide and manage the link between the clinical placements and tutorials by: Conducting placement visits to ensure the learning needs of the students are identified and placements are aware of how to meet these in practice.

2.In the extended role they will be managed by the Director of Education and Lead tutor to lead a team of tutors, clinical supervisors, learning facilitators and administrative staff (depending on recruitment to these posts) and provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to the team via regular communications and peer group meetings. In the extended role they will be central in coordinating all the other Solent staff, including doctors, to maximise the value of placements with support from the Lead Tutor.

3.In the extended role they will lead and facilitate Medical School placement visits/inspections. In addition structured written reports are created in this extended role to provide annual Quality Assurance reports as requested by the medical school with support from the Director of Medical Education (DME)

4.In the extended role they will be mainly working autonomously and be expected to independently use analytical skills to review service delivery and improvement.

5.To be aware of those budgets relating to local psychiatry medical education

Quality and Service Improvement

*Identifies situations of clinical risk and takes appropriate action to ensure a safe environment for the students.

*Contributes and leads on evidence-based practice in speciality areas.

*Demonstrates commitment to quality improvements, risk management and resource utilisation leading in monitoring and evaluation activities including audit and research activities

*Leads and provides input into clinical standards/protocols and policies and undertakes clinical audits as required.

*Independently evaluates the effectiveness, efficiency and safety of clinical practice contributing to service improvement initiatives.

*Develops and participates in the implementation of models of teaching appropriate to student/service needs.

*Contributes to and participates in Solent NHS policy development providing own expertise where relevant and feedback on proposed polices based on relevant experience and expertise where applicable.

*Leads in case review and debriefing activities as required.

*Leads group discussions that review current practice.

*Promote patient and public involvement in activities designed to inform service improvement

*Actively lead and participate in clinical audit and service improvement activity to improve patient care and patient outcomes (privacy, dignity, and duty of candour).

*Fully adheres to the Solent NHS trust Integrated Clinical and Safeguarding Supervision policy along with Safeguarding Children and adult policies, and information sharing protocols to ensure the health and well-being of children and adults at risk.

*Sound knowledge and use of the Mental Capacity Act and maintains MCA mandatory training.

  • Relevant Masters level qualification or equivalent experience at post graduate degree level
  • Registered healthcare professional
  • Recognised learner support qualification (ENB 998 or Mentorship for Health and Social Care Practitioners) or completion of a recognised AHP Educator Programme.

  • Education and Training Qualification at level 4

  • Experience creating and delivering high quality, supportive learning environments
  • Experience of working in a mental health setting and providing tailored assessment and intervention based on need.
