An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Specialty Doctor post to join our Mental Health Services for Older People (MHSOP) Care Home Liaison team & South East Cardiff CMHT .

The Mental Health Services for Older People Directorate is responsible for providing care to an elderly population of circa 81,645 persons over the age of 65 in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan figure .The Directorate focuses its services on patients who experience the first onset of severe mental illness after the age of 65 and patients of any age with an established diagnosis of dementia associated with significant behavioural or psychiatric symptoms

Services are organised within three localities - Cardiff North & West, Cardiff South and the Vale of Glamorgan. Each area has its own Community Mental Health Team for Older People.

Hospital based facilities are currently (*) provided at:
  • University Hospital Llandough,
  • Barry Hospital, where there is a 14-bed challenging behaviour Young Onset Dementia ward spread over three units.
  • Grand Avenue, where there is an integrated Local Authority & health Tier 2 day service

In addition there are also well developed Liaison Old Age Psychiatry Services both for District General Hospitals & Care Homes, a Community REACT (crisis & out of hours) Service & a Younger Onset Dementia Service. We also have a well-developed in-patient Salaried GP service providing routine and urgent medical & physical care for all patients in the service.

Main duties of the job

The six session element will be working in the Care Home Liaison Team. The role includes assessment and treatment of people over 65 years old with both functional (affective and psychotic disorders) and organic (neurodegenerative) illness, with frequent co-morbidity across both physical and mental health needs, in over 70 care homes (residential and nursing) across the whole of Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan. Assessments occur in the care homes and the Specialty Doctor, along with the team members will be responsible for running Inreach clinics in Care homes as well as Section 117 reviews with the social workers.

Four sessions will be spent working closely with and on behalf of the Consultant Old Age Psychiatrists for the Cardiff South and East sector of the Mental Health Services for Older People Directorate of the Mental Health Clinical Board. They will spend their time undertaking community assessments and reviews (including urgent and emergency referrals), supporting the out-patient clinic alongside the Consultants, and assessment and development of Care and Treatment Plans with the Consultant and MDT, for patients undergoing acute inpatient mental health assessment (variable number).

Care Homes Liaison (6 sessions):

The Speciality Doctor appointee will spend their time performing duties as follows: supporting the Consultant and Multi-disciplinary Care Homes Liaison Team in undertaking assessments, development of Care and Treatment Plans with the Consultant and MDT, take part in the relevant meetings, hold clinics, perform capacity assessments and liaise with the wider MDT.

This post will have the flexibility to incorporate working with the Consultant and wider MDT in the Community setting, after the initial 3 months of the post. This will include community assessments and reviews (including urgent and emergency referrals), running an Inreach Clinic alongside the Consultant, and assessment and development of Care and Treatment Plans with the Consultant and MDT, for patients undergoing acute mental health assessment (variable number).

SE Team ( 4 sessions)

The Speciality Doctor appointee will spend their time performing duties as follows: supporting the Consultant and Multi-disciplinary Community Mental Health Team for Older People in undertaking community assessments and reviews (including urgent and emergency referrals), running an Out-patient Clinic alongside the Consultant, and assessment and development of Care and Treatment Plans with the Consultant and MDT, for patients undergoing acute inpatient mental health assessment (variable number).

Person Specification QUALIFICATIONS Essential
  • MB BS or recognised equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice
Desirable
  • Academic excellence (prizes, merits, distinctions etc.)
  • Section 12 (2) recognition under MHA 1983 or qualification to become Section 12 approved
  • Experience in working in mental health services in UK.
EXPERIENCE Essential
  • Four years full-time postgraduate training (or part-time equivalent), at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as fixed-term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty, OR equivalent experience / competencies*
  • Experience of working in mental health services in UK.
