Applications are invited for appointment to vacancies available as Locum Appointment for Service commencing from February 2023 for a 12-month period. The post available is an inpatient post covering our Acute wards at Antelope House in Southampton.

The post would be based on the Acute wards at Antelope House, this is a modern psychiatric hospital set in the city of Southampton. The applicant will join a busy, exciting and challenging service. The teams on both our acute ward (Saxon 18 beds, Trinity 16 beds) are consultant led, and have support from a wide multidisciplinary team, consisting of nursing, psychology, OT and pharmacy members. There are existing junior medical training posts established in the hospital whom the applicant will work alongside in the unit. The role would be to provide care both regarding physical and psychiatric care to patients on the wards, as well as attending local education programme, and also have the opportunity to be involved if they want with other trust activities such as research, teaching etc,

This vacancy works alongside the Wessex Core Psychiatry and GP Training rotation -- however the 6 months spent in these posts cannot be recognised for training as the appointments process is not being carried out by the Deanery

Main duties of the job

All posts have a service element and the following covers the majority of duties. There will be minor variations in different hospitals but the list is aimed at covering the majority of duties:

*Liaise between nurses, doctors, patients, relatives and senior medical staff.

*Attend and participate in ward MDT's and Ward rounds as timetabled.

*Take part in rostered emergency work.

*Provide cover for colleagues' absence on authorised leave (including cover for short term unscheduled absences).

*Maintain continued professional development.

*Attend weekly educational and multidisciplinary sessions.

*Undertake audit at various times throughout the rotations.

*Teach medical students as directed.

*Co-operate with members of the personnel department when monitoring hours of work and other personnel issues.

*Attend induction in each hospital or new department.

*Comply with all local policies including dress code, annual and study leave.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • MB BS or equivalent
  • Full Registration with GMC with licence to practice
  • Completion of Foundation year training or equivalent
Desirable
  • MRCPsych Part1
Experience Essential
  • Completion of Foundation years 1 and 2 training or equivalent
  • UK clinical experience
  • 6 months previous psychiatry experience
Desirable
  • Understanding of basic principles of audit
  • 6 months previous psychiatry experience
  • Good ground knowledge of psychiatry
  • Understanding of the Mental Health Act
Additional Criteria Essential
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English.
  • Ability to work within a team.
  • Communicates well with staff and patients
  • Demonstrates leadership skills and self motivated.
