This post offers the opportunity to develop skills in General ICU, Cardiothoracic and Burns. The successful candidate will be primarily based on our 28 bedded General ICU but will have the chance to work closely with the Clinical specialists on the other units and as such, this is the ideal position for a Band 6 looking for a progression. The role is flexible regarding the 3 days worked during the week with alternate weekends. At the weekends you will manage the small on-call team alongside the newly developed Orthopaedic and Medical 7 day working team. Main duties of the job

Job Summary/Job Purpose

To manage a defined caseload of patients with complex needs within this setting, using evidence based / client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions in General ITU and surgical wards.
  • To provide leadership for junior staff, through supervision and appraisal as delegated by supervisor.
  • To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of physiotherapy services within this designated area/team, holding responsibility for defined projects.
  • To contribute to the maintenance and development of the Health Board Physiotherapy Service.
  • To supervise Band 6 and Band 5 Physiotherapists on the unit and ensure their knowledge and skills are developed.
  • To supervise the Rehabilitation techs on the unit and with the development of the follow-up rehabilitation techs in the community.
  • To participate in CPD and develop skills and knowledge both clinically and in management.
  • To participate in the seven day working rota

Responsibility for Patient/Client care
    • Develop and deliver specialized programs of care and support junior staff in the delivery of these programs.
    • Accountable for the direct delivery of the physiotherapy programs of care to clients within designated areas.
    • Direct more junior and support staff in their delivery of, and responsibility for patient/ client care
    • Clinically competent to provide advice and treatment to complex critically ill patients who present with a wide variety of conditions.
    • Undertake physiotherapy assessments for a designated caseload, addressing physical performance and skill deficits.
    • Work with patients to identify physiotherapy goals as part of the overall care plan.
    • Plan and implement individual and/or group interventions, in collaboration with the patient, using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals.
    • Develop specialized programs of care using specialized approaches and models of practice.
    • Monitor and evaluate treatment in order to measure progress and ensure effectiveness of the intervention and record outcomes for all patients on caseload, audit outcomes and share with peers and members of MDT.
    • Respect the individuality, values, and cultural and religious diversity of patients and contribute to the provision of a service sensitive to these needs.
    • Apply a high level of understanding of the effect of disability and provide training and advice on lifestyle changes and adaptations.

Clinical
      • Undertake advanced specialist Physiotherapy assessments for a designated caseload of patients with complex needs.
      • Manage the rehabilitation techs associated with critical care
      • Manage a diverse, complex service encompassing; Critical care, surgical patients and the development of the follow up hospital to home service for the critical care patients.
      • Work with patients/carers to negotiate and identify their Physiotherapy goals as part of their overall therapy plan.
      • Monitor and evaluate treatment in order to measure progress and ensure effectiveness of the intervention.
      • Demonstrate confidence and skill to use reflective practice and identify personal strengths and areas for development.
      • Demonstrate the ability to acknowledge limitations in own practice and seek help to develop professional competence/ practice
      • Work autonomously to undertake physiotherapy assessments for a designated caseload within this setting, addressing physical performance and skill deficits by diagnosing the patients problems, using analytical skills to formulate solutions.
      • Make judgments involving highly complex facts/ situations requiring in depth analysis/ interpretation and comparisons of a wide range of therapeutic options in order to decide on the best course of intervention and accurate prognosis and comprehensive case management plan

Professional
        • Demonstrate the ability to balance professional issues such as confidentiality and duty of care in a multi-disciplinary setting in order to work effectively.
        • Demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance and take responsibility for its application to the delivery of physiotherapy within your area of work.
        • Hold a qualification enabling registration with the Health Professions Council as a Physiotherapist.
        • Adhere to the CSP&HCPC Code of Ethics, Professional Conduct and standards of Practice.
        • Keep up to date and understand the requirements of and the implications for service delivery of national standards e.g. NICE, NSF
        • Adhere to departmental policies and procedures that facilitate the smooth running of the service, and to communicate any problems or discrepancies to line manager immediately.
