It is a very exciting time to be joining Turner Ward, Low Secure Learning Disability and Autism Ward. The post holder will have a degree or diploma in occupational therapy and have a commitment to evidence-based practice and continuing professional development. We offer a supportive working environment, regular supervision, opportunities for CPD and annual appraisal. We are an innovative service and you will be actively encouraged to develop your skills as an occupational therapist. You will also have opportunity to develop specialist skills in assessments and interventions for e.g. Remotivation, MOHO based assessment tools and sensory interventions. There will be opportunities to work alongside senior OT colleagues as well as other MDT colleagues within the clinical setting.

The role of the occupational therapist on Turner Ward focuses on the service user's journey, looking at discharge planning and suitable accommodation prospects from the point of admission in order to have a robust, client-centred care plan. The occupational therapist will also interface with community services to provide transitional support and ensure the most appropriate move into the community is facilitated.

We are looking for someone who will work holistically with Learning Disability and Autism service users to ensure excellent patient-centred care, aiming towards a safe discharge into the community.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will need to be proficient with verbal and written communication skills and be able to adapt these skills as appropriate to situation. The occupational therapist will independently manage a clinical caseload of service user with complex mental health needs. The occupational therapist will promote social inclusion and physical and mental well-being using evidence based practice. This is underpinned by the principles of hope and recovery, health promotion and relapse prevention. The occupational therapist will use specialist mental health and occupational therapy assessments, including Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) tools in conjunction with other relevant theoretical tools.

The occupational therapist will plan and implement individual and/or group interventions collaboratively, to enable service users to achieve valued goals and satisfactory occupational performance outcome. A main part of the work on the ward will also include risk assessment and planning with the MDT.

Skills that would be beneficial to the role would include good time management, effective communication and brilliant teamwork skills. Qualities for this role would include being empathetic, a good listener and creativity. To be passionate about learning disability work and mental health would be essential in working with likeminded colleagues.

Job description Job responsibilities

  • To provide a specialist Occupational Therapy service to services users within medium and low secure services providing interventions underpinned by the Model of Human Occupation and the principles of Recovery.
  • To manage a defined caseload of patients with complex needs, using evidence based /person centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions in an in-patient forensic setting and during escorted community leave.
  • To maintain accurate and contemporaneous clinical records and produce specialist reports for case conferences.
  • To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of OT services within a designated area/team, holding responsibility for defined projects.
  • To develop skills and knowledge through participation in the preceptorship programme.
  • To supervise junior staff as delegated.
  • To represent occupational therapy within the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To provide group and 1:1 interventions.
  • To promote recovery and social inclusion.
  • To maintain standards of OT practice as directed by the Director of Therapies.
  • To undertake regular audit and R&D activities.
  • To undertake the supervision of OT students on fieldwork placements once the preceptorship programme is complete.
  • To provide Disability Champion duties leading the multi-disciplinary team in Disability Equality matters within Specialist Services as required.


Person Specification Education, Training & Qualifications Essential
  • Diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Registration to practice as an OT in the UK
Experience Essential
  • Fieldwork experience in physical and mental health settings at undergraduate level.
  • Experience of multidisciplinary working
Desirable
  • Experience of individual & group work
  • Experience of using mental health services as a service users or carer/relative/friend of a service user
  • Experience of working in clinical practice as an OT for 1 year
  • Experience of working within a forensic setting
Knowledge and Skills Essential
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with service users and colleagues
  • Basic IT and word processing skills
  • Ability to reflect on & critically appraise own performance
  • Ability to support junior colleagues & peers in their development e.g. offering information, alerting them to training/development opportunities
  • Evidence of CPD & development activities
  • Ability to maintain a positive professional behaviour
