Are you an enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 Occupational Therapist looking for a new challenge?

Shaftesbury Clinic is a Forensic in-patient service within South West London and St Georges NHS Trust providing specialised multi-disciplinary care to male and female mentally disordered offenders. We are looking for an experienced and dynamic band 5 Occupational Therapist to join our well-established team within a Low and Medium Secure Service.

We are a friendly and supportive team who creatively deliver occupation-based interventions to facilitate the maintenance and development of skills for service users. We offer a wide range of interventions, including accredited education sessions and we have developed a unit-based Caf with links to the local community as part of our vocation project. We also provide physical health interventions alongside our Exercise Therapy colleagues and ADL, Remotivation, Forensic Recovery College and other specialised interventions.

Main duties of the job

We offer a supportive working environment, regular supervision, opportunities for CPD and annual appraisal. We are an innovative service, and you will be actively encouraged to develop your skills as an occupational therapist. You will have access to various training forums including a regular clinical forum and will have regular contact with Occupational Therapists across the Specialist directorate. You will also have opportunity to develop specialist skills in assessments and interventions for e.g. Remotivation, MOHO based assessment tools and sensory interventions. There will be opportunities to work alongside senior OT colleagues as well as other MDT colleagues within the clinical setting and the potential to access DBT, KUF (Personality Disorder training), PTTLs (teaching qualification) and Supervision training.

To apply you will also have a degree or diploma in occupational therapy and have a commitment to evidence-based practice and continuing professional development.

Job description Job responsibilities

To provide a specialist Occupational Therapy service to services users within medium and low secure services providing interventions underpinned by the Model of Human Occupation and the principles of Recovery. To manage a defined caseload of patients with complex needs, using evidence based /person centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions in an in-patient forensic setting and during escorted community leave. To maintain accurate and contemporaneous clinical records and produce specialist reports for case conferences. To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of OT services within a designated area/team, holding responsibility for defined projects. To develop skills and knowledge through participation in the preceptorship programme. To supervise junior staff as delegated. To represent occupational therapy within the multi-disciplinary team. To provide group and 1:1 interventions. To promote recovery and social inclusion. To maintain standards of OT practice as directed by the Director of Therapies. To undertake regular audit and R&D activities. To undertake the supervision of OT students on fieldwork placements once the preceptorship programme is complete. To provide Disability Champion duties leading the multi-disciplinary team in Disability Equality matters within Specialist Services as required.

Person Specification Education, Training & Qualifications Essential
  • Diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Registration to practice as an OT in the UK
Experience Essential
  • Fieldwork experience in physical and mental health settings at undergraduate level.
  • Experience of multidisciplinary working
Desirable
  • Experience of individual & group work
  • Experience of using mental health services as a service users or carer/relative/friend of a service user
  • Experience of working in clinical practice as an OT for 1 year
  • Experience of working within a forensic setting
Knowledge and Skills Essential
  • Evidence of CPD & development activities
  • Ability to maintain a positive professional behaviour
  • Clinical reasoning skills to assess a service user's needs (including risk assessment) & an ability to inform care plans
  • Knowledge of risk assessment issues & the application of risk assessment to practice
  • Knowledge of specialist clinical skills applied within OT models & frameworks
  • Willingness to develop working knowledge of model of human occupation tools within first six months in mental health practice
  • Willingness to undertake practice placement educators' course and participate in student education
Desirable
  • Experience of writing OT reports
  • Ability to implement clinical protocols
  • Member of the British Association of Occupational Therapy
