We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced, resilient and dynamic ward manager to join the ALD in-patient at Bankfields Court. The post offers the successful candidate the opportunity to manage the service through a substantial service re-design looking at influencing a new model of care delivery and reviewing and recruiting an appropriately skilled workforce.

A proven track record in change management, effective roster management, introducing and reviewing supervision processes and other performance metrics is essential. Experience of working with and providing leadership and management to the MDT is pivotal to the success of this role.

Previous clinical experience of working with clients with Learning Disability, Autism and Behaviours that challenge requiring individual packages of care as well as care in shared environments will be welcomed.

Main duties of the job

Knowledge and experience of reviewing practice and implementing national policy in relation re reducing restrictive interventions, HOPEs model would be beneficial. Applicants will have excellent clinical knowledge and leadership/managerial qualities including the ability to influence others, provide stability during service change as well as have excellent communication skills and the ability to network and build relationships.

The successful ward manager will work with clinical leads and Advanced Nurse practitioner utilising collective leadership strategies to improve the lives of people with mental ill health and/or learning disabilities by minimising the impact of their condition through effective leadership and management and delivery of excellent services to promote recovery and wellbeing for all service users. Promoting strategies to ensure staff feel supported and well being is maintained is essential due to the complex and acute nature of the service.

About us

The ALD in patient services provides a specialist service for adults with a learning disability or autism who exhibit behaviours that challenge to themselves and others. The service provides individualised, comprehensive packages of care within Bankfields court and as a service has a further in-patient base at Lanchester Road Hospital (LRH) Durham. The successful candidate will work closely with the ward manager from the LRH site.

The service is currently working to review and transform in-pt service provision.

Job description Job responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all staff demonstrate practice that encompasses the Department of Health 6 Cs: Care, Compassion, Commitment, Competence, Courage and Communication. Responsibility for the operational management of the ward within budgeted resources including the effective line management of the ward team whilst overseeing and leading service development initiatives, ensuring continual quality improvement as an integral part of the Trusts Quality Improvement System will be required.

Ensuring the provision of an environment and culture where patients, carers and staff can raise concerns and be confident that: they will be listened to, their views will be respected and their concerns will be investigated where appropriate, without fear of retribution will be a central part of the ward managers role.

The focus of the ward managers post is to manage the service and direct clinical involvement will be a minimal part of the role.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • RNMH / RNLD, current professional registration with NMC.
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
  • MIP, FLIP, ENB 998 Teaching & Assessing in Clinical Practice or City & Guilds 730 Teaching in Adult Education.
  • Recognised sign-off mentor.
  • Post-graduate diploma in a relevant area.
  • Leadership or management qualification or willingness to work towards. Qualification must be achieved within agreed timescale.
  • Quality Improvement Systems for Leaders or willing to undertake within agreed timescale
  • Key skills in literacy, numeracy and ITQ level 2 (or equivalent)
Experience Essential
  • Significant experience working with people with complex mental ill health or learning disabilities in an inpatient or community environment
  • Significant experience of working collaboratively with service users and their families/carers
  • Significant experience of providing clinical supervision, mentoring and teaching to healthcare professionals and students.
  • Demonstrable leadership or management experience
  • Significant role in quality improvement activities
Desirable
  • Use of the Trust's Quality Improvement system
Knowledge Essential
  • Significant evidenced based knowledge of best practice in caring for patients in the designated field.
  • Good understanding of relevant legislation (e.g. Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act) and its application in practice.
  • Good understanding of clinical governance and its application in practice.
  • Detailed understanding of Safeguarding and its application in practice.
