This is a great opportunity for aClinical Nurse Specialist to work within our Personality Disorder Service.

This post is based in either Peterborough or Cambridge, but at times will involve also covering our bases in Huntingdon and Wisbech.

The service is a NICE compliant specialist outpatient service which operates across all four localities; Cambridge, Huntingdon, Fenland and Peterborough. The service has undergone an innovative redesign and is embarking on an exciting phase of delivering a high-quality service which strives for excellence for its service users.

It provides evidence-based treatment protocols for patients with moderate to severe personality disorder which cover three main areas of impairment that the illness can present; psychological, occupational and social, with a specific focus on managing high chronic risk. The treatment protocols are based on models of Mentalisation Based Therapy, Dialectical Based Therapy and the Model of Human Occupation.

The service also offers consultation and training for other teams and services as well as close partnership working with GPs and primary care, and is committed to staff training, service evaluation and research. The service consists of consultant psychiatrists, psychologists, enhanced nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, support workers/peer support workers, and assistant psychologists.

Main duties of the job

Successful applicants will be strong team workers with demonstrable commitment and enthusiasm for working with people with personality disorders and an understanding of the impact that personality disorder can have on quality of life.

Experience of facilitating group work in a mental health or social care setting would be an advantage, along with experience of working on a 1:1 basis with service users.

  • To coordinate and work within the PDCS duty team, supporting clinicians with managing and assessing high risk clinical situations and formulating risk management plans.
  • Within the context of the specialist Personality Disorder Pathway to provide effective and efficient management of clients who are presenting in a crisis and to provide effective team and multi-agency working, including liaising closely with G.P surgeries.
  • Undertake operational duties (for example, rostering, leave management, peer supervision, investigation) as delegated by the Team/Service Manager to ensure the service operates on a day-to-day basis.
  • To participate, liaise and promote close links with community mental health teams and other agencies to develop effective intervention plans and discuss referrals to the Personality Disorder Community Service.
  • To develop and implement plans for treatment, therapeutic intervention and/or management of a clients presentation. This is done in partnership with the team. The treatment will normally fall within the broad remit of Dialectical/Mentalisation based therapies, but where appropriate other therapeutic approaches with proven efficacy may be offered.
  • To act as lead clinician for undertaking assessments and advising clients and other mental health professionals in matters arising from the Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults framework.
  • To manage a caseload that will contain high risk service users, engaging in 1:1 sessions, group facilitation and crisis management.
  • To ensure appropriate records of assessment and treatment are regularly maintained/audited and adhere to professional guidelines, CPA/Trust policy and recognised systems within the Personality Disorder Pathway.
  • To participate in and lead on clinical, business and team meetings as appropriate, contributing to effective team functioning, service delivery/development, undertaking supervision as required.
  • To engage in and promote, a culture of leadership, development and motivation. To lead and engage in supervision, training and development reviews with staff using Personal Development Plans and Individual Performance Reviews to enable staff to work to their full potential.


Person Specification Education/Qualifications Essential
  • Registered Nurse (mental health qualification)
  • NMC Registered
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Degree or equivalent professional qualifications
  • Non-medical prescribing qualification or intention to complete
Desirable
  • Qualification in a Therapy eg. CBT, DBT, MBT, KUF
  • Management or Leadership Qualification
  • Qualification in teaching / train the trainer course
  • Post registration training in risk management
Experience Essential
  • Experience of working as a Senior practitioner with clients with a diagnosis of Personality Disorder
  • Experience of working in a Multi-disciplinary Community Mental Health Team
  • Evidence of clinical supervision training &/or experience
  • Experience & Evidence of recruiting, managing and training staff
  • Extensive experience of conducting clinical assessments including risk assessment and managing a clinical caseload working within the CPA process
Desirable
  • Lived experience of mental health
  • Experience of working within a Crisis service
  • Highly experienced post qualification
  • Qualification or significant experience using CBT, DBT, MBT, or CAT with service users
  • Experience of developing user and carer involvement strategies in service evaluation, development and the recovery process
