To provide a highly specialist assessment, therapeutic intervention and consultation service for children and young people who have engaged in problematic or harmful behaviour sexual behaviour and their families referred to the Be Safe Service. The children and young people seen at the Be Safe service may have severe, complex and/or enduring emotional, behavioural, psychological, psychiatric difficulties or learning difficulties.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for someone with a Professional qualification in either Mental Health Nursing; Clinical Psychology; Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy or Counselling; Occupational Therapy; Social Work, Family Therapy or other relevant professional qualifications in relation to child mental health, criminal justice and harmful sexual behaviour in children and young people. and professional registration. An ability to work with children and young people, their parents/carers and the system around them is vital. An understanding of risk management is important as is experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team. Knowledge with regards to assessment and therapeutic approaches to working with this group of children and young people is desirable . Experience in working in a multi-disciplinary team. An ability to provide consultations and training to the multi-agency network is required. Commitment to anti-discriminatory practice is expected.

Be Safe is a highly regarded multi-disciplinary team based within the AWP specialist CAMHS that delivers services in Bristol for young people up to 18 and in South Gloucestershire for children aged 7 to 11 who have engaged in problematic/harmful sexual behaviour, and on a spot purchase basis from neighbouring authorities. The team has a strong commitment to anti-discriminatory practice and leads on CAMHS wide initiatives in this regard. Access to training and support to develop knowledge and skills for working with this group of children and young people is provided.

Job description Job responsibilities

To undertake targeted and comprehensive assessments of children and young people who have engaged in problematic or harmful sexual behaviour with their parents/carers within agreed timeframes.

To plan, deliver, and evaluate defined specialist therapeutic interventions as indicated in the assessment process, in line with the service users care and support plan.

To provide consultation and advice to a broad range of professionals including social care, health, criminal justice, and education professionals. This could relate to risk management and safety planning as well as care and treatment options.

To provide multi-agency training on working with children and young people with problematic and harmful sexual behaviour in collaboration with other members of the team.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • oProfessional qualification in either Mental Health Nursing; Clinical Psychology; Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy or Counselling; Occupational Therapy; Social Work, Family Therapy or other relevant professional qualifications in relation to child mental health, criminal justice and harmful sexual behaviour in children and young people.
  • oRelevant professional registration and/or accreditation.
Experience Essential
  • oExperience of working with children and young people who have engaged in risky behaviour and their parents/carers and who services find hard to engage.
  • oInterest and experience in working with diversity and a commitment to developing services to minority communities.
  • oExperience of working with parents/carers.
Desirable
  • oExperience and knowledge of working with children and young people with problematic/harmful sexual behaviours often with highly complex mental health presentations and/or learning difficulties.
  • oExperience of working with parents/carers.
Skills Essential
  • oAbility to provide specialist consultations, assessments and interventions with regards to children, young people and their families as part of a personal clinical caseload.
  • oAbility to work in collaboration with the multi-agency network supporting the child including social care, education, health and criminal justice professionals.
  • oAble to contribute to training and consultation for other multi-agency professionals.
  • oProven ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
Desirable
  • oAbility to work with children and young people with developmental delay and/or learning disabilities.
Knowledge Essential
  • oKnowledge about child development including sexual development, attachment, working with trauma, the development of resilience.
  • oKnowledge of relevant legislation, including The Children Act 1989 / 2004 and strategic frameworks and guidance for clinical practice and professional management, and NICE Guidance on working with children and young people with problematic/harmful sexual behaviour.
Desirable
  • Knowledge of assessment and therapeuitc approaches to working with children and young people who have harmed sexually and their parents/carers.
  • oFamiliarity with assessment including recognised assessment frameworks such as AIM 3, and treatment models used with children/young people and families who present as high risk in terms of harmful sexual behaviours and who may have complex trauma histories alongside mental health difficulties e.g. Attachment difficulties; Neurological/ Developmental difficulties; complex emotional and behavioural difficulties etc.
