Prison Inreach Mental Health Team

We are seeking to recruit a (part time; 2 days per week) Band 7 or 8a psychologist within the Prison Inreach Team at HMP Swansea. The service forms part of the Rehabilitation & Recovery (R&R) Directorate, which sits alongside the Adult Mental Health and Older Adult service/s of the Mental Health Division, Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBU HB)

The key objective of this post is to ensure that prisoners with serious and enduring mental health problems are appropriately assessed, supported and receive appropriate psychological interventions to aid them in their recovery and in risk reduction under the Prison Inreach Service, which covers HMP Swansea.

In conjunction with the Service Manager and the Consultant Psychologist, the post holder will deliver and advise on the appropriate utilisation of psychological resources to the service. A key emphasis will be to contribute to the social inclusion and recovery agenda.

Applicants should have a post graduate qualification in clinical, forensic or counselling psychology and previous experience of working within an adult mental health or forensic setting.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide a range of psychological assessments, formulation development and evidence based interventions, for clients with complex psychological needs to aid them in their recovery and reduce risk. The role will also involve offering advice and consultation on client psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues, as well as to other non-professional carers and workers of other agencies where appropriate. The post holder will be an active member of the R&R service group by contributing to service evaluation, audit and training, in addition to the clinical supervision of assistant and trainee psychologists.

The health board actively encourages and supports research and Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The post holder will have access to regular clinical supervision, reflective practice and a training package (to be jointly agreed upon following commencement of the position). We have strong links with local Clinical, Forensic and Counselling psychology training courses within South Wales and South West England.

Person Specification Qualifications / Training Essential
  • Doctoral level training in clinical psychology or masters level training in counselling or forensic psychology
  • HCPC registered psychologist

  • Training in relevant intervention skills e.g. CBT for psychosis.
Experience Essential
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings,

  • Experience of the application of clinical / forensic in different cultural context

  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.

  • High level knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies.
