Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist - Acute Medicine

Are you looking for a new and exciting challenge in acute medicine? SBU's Medical Physiotherapy team are looking for a clinician with clinical and leadership experience to provide high level assessment, treatment and discharge planning skills, to work in our core medical physiotherapy team. New and aspirational leaders within physiotherapy are welcomed to apply our supportive team.

The post holder will join a well-established team of compassionate clinicians, to provide leadership, assessment and treatment for a wide-range of patients across our acute medical wards. The post holder will also work closely with hospital and community MDT's to facilitate timely and effective patient flow. You will experience a range of medical specialties, including neurology, respiratory, gastroenterology, endocrinology, infectious diseases, care of the elderly and the acute medical assessment unit.

We hold a weekly in-service training programme and encourage initiatives for service development. We promote and value regular supervision and mentoring sessions, across all grades of staff.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide leadership within the physiotherapy team and deliver the Physiotherapy Service in the acute medical wards.
  • To manage a defined caseload of patients with complex needs within this setting, using evidence based / client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate
  • To provide leadership for junior staff, through supervision and appraisal as delegated by the line manager.
  • To provide high level discharge planning skills in collaboration with the MDT and community services.
  • To contribute to the maintenance and development of the Health Board Physiotherapy
  • To supervise Band 5 and band 6 Physiotherapy staff, and support staff
  • To educate and supervise students on clinical
  • To participate in CPD and develop skills and knowledge both clinically and in
  • To participate in the on-call respiratory
  • To participate in service developments such 7-day working, as required.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Degree in Physiotherapy (or other relevant qualification)
  • Professional Registration with HCPC
  • oEvidence of post-graduate masters level education or evidence of equivalent clinical experience.
Desirable
  • Membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP)
  • Membership of a clinical or professional network
Knowledge & Experience Essential
  • Substantial experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Supervision experience of students, physiotherapy assistants and junior staff.
  • Experience in working in areas that are linked to patient flow.
  • NHS experience
  • Experience working with acute medical patient cohort
Desirable
  • Experience of leading a team.
  • Be able to work in various critical care and respiratory areas
  • Working in the community setting.
Service Development Essential
  • Evidence of comprehensive and advanced continuing professional development (CPD), maintained in a portfolio. Including attendance at recent highly specialised post graduate courses relevant to the clinical field/speciality.
  • Involvement in audit, research and understanding quality issues.
Desirable
  • Service development experience
Skills Essential
  • Ability to organise, prioritise and delegate.
  • Professional maturity and ability to network and form professional relationships with other healthcare/multi agency professionals.
  • Understanding of clinical governance and its implications for the service, including experience of quality issues and audit.
  • Ability to cope working in a stressful environment and with emotional and aggressive patients and carers.
